My research focuses on improving the agronomic performance, winter hardiness, disease resistance, and end-use quality of hard winter wheat (bread and noodles), barley (forage and feed grain), and triticale (forage and feed grain), and on developing cutting edge breeding methods. My group has co-released 40 cultivars and 36 germplasm lines or populations. We are best known for our wheat cultivars which are grown on over 60% of the wheat land in Nebraska and are grown extensively in the northern Great Plains. Bread, being a staple food, is a natural target for nutritional improvement and translating basic discoveries into products. My teaching and service activities emphasize graduate education and outreach in plant breeding and genetics.
