MPUP-SD Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to move to Lincoln for the MPUP-SD program?

No! Our program was designed for people who are currently working as teachers full-time. As such, the majority of our courses are provided via distance education. There is an in-person requirement during summers. So, you do not have to move to Lincoln, but you will have to visit. A portion of the travel and lodging for MPUP-SD scholars will be covered.

How do I get the grant money for the MPUP-SD?

Apply to the program. Once you are accepted, your application will automatically be reviewed for all available funding options.

What does the grant pay for?

The MPUP-SD grant will pay for your tuition for the course sequence of 36 credits. The grant does not pay for books and fees. The grant will also pay for a membership to a professional organization, travel expenses to the Nebraska Deaf-Blind Institute and the MPUP-SD Seminar in Lincoln, Nebraska.

How long will it take to finish the MPUP-SD program?

We have designed the program to be completed in 2 years (including summers).

Do I have to be from a Mid-Plains state to be part of MPUP-SD?

No. However, this grant was designed to address the shortage of teachers in the Mid-Plains area, so geography may play a role in determining grant funding if there are more applicants than available funding.

What happens if I change my mind about the MPUP-SD program?

If you change your mind before you have signed any forms, then you just have to let us know so we can review other applicants who may not have received funding. However, if you have signed forms and taken classes you will be responsible for repayment of any funding received.

Do I have to teach in Nebraska, Kansas or Iowa after I finish the MPUP-SD program?

No, but you do have to teach somewhere. Again, this grant was designed to address the shortage of teachers in the Mid-Plains area, so we hope you will stick around. However, the actual terms of the work repayment allow you to work anywhere in the United States.

Will I have earned a master’s degree when I complete the MPUP-SD program?

It depends. If you do not already have a master's degree, then you will earn one during the MPUP-SD program. If you already have a master's degree, you are not obligated to earn a second graduate degree (though you will certainly have that option). See the instructions for application to see which graduate program is the best fit for you.

When I finish, will I be certified to teach students with visual impairments AND students who are deaf or hard of hearing?

No. You will choose either VI or DHH. If you're not sure, you can make this choice after the first semester. While we include content on students who are deafblind, we do not offer certification in deafblindness.

What are my obligations after I graduate?

You must work for two years for every one year of funding you receive. Detailed information about your service obligation will be reviewed with you before you accept the grant. If you do not fulfill your service obligation, you will need to repay the funds you received.
