Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center
About the Schmoker Reading Center
The Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center was founded in 2004 to provide reading and writing tutoring to children in the community. Tutoring is provided by UNL graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Education and Human Sciences, under the direction of UNL faculty and certified teachers. Instruction is individualized and based on assessments given by the tutors. It is our goal that each child improves his or her reading and writing skills, gains greater confidence as a reader, and establishes a love for reading.
Who We Serve
We provide one-on-one instruction to students who are reading below grade level. We conduct screenings prior to the start of each semester. Contact us for more information and to schedule your child's screening.
We serve students in grades 2-6 year-round, and students in grades 7-12 during the fall semester. The number of students served in each session averages between 45-90 children.
The 2020 fall session of tutoring begins September 7th.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fall 2020 tutoring at the Schmoker Reading Center will be conducted online through the Zoom video application. Applicants will need access to a computer or tablet with both audio and video capabilities, as well as a good Internet connection. We welcome applications from anywhere in Nebraska, as proximity to the Lincoln campus is not necessary for participation. Because we must streamline the curriculum to deliver online tutoring, however, we are inviting only those students who are currently entering 2nd through 12th grade. Thank you for your understanding.
