Topics, speakers announced for spring Racial Literacy Roundtables

The Racial Literacy Roundtables events in Spring 2024 will feature discussions about pursuing meaningful conversations around the effects of race/ism, queer and trans street youth, and equity in STEM education. 

Led by collaborators from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Education and Human Sciences, UNO and UNK, the Racial Literacy Roundtables are for students, particularly pre-service teachers, to work on developing racial literacy skills. All Roundtables are held virtually from 6-7:30 p.m. and each event requires a separate registration. Details for the Spring 2024 events are below:

Feb. 7 – “Pursuing Meaningful Conversations with Students Around the Effects of Race/ism” led by Chantelle Grace

March 6 – “Queer and Trans Street Youth Lives and a Method of Faithful Witnessing” led by Cindy Cruz

April 3 – “Equity in STEM Education” led by Christa Jackson 

Chantelle Grace is an assistant clinical professor in social science education in the School of Teacher Education at Florida State University. Grace’s work strives to model the many ways in which social studies educators can pursue meaningful conversations with students around the historical and contemporary effects of race/ism in their communities. 

Cindy Cruz is an associate professor in the Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies Department in the College of Education at the University of Arizona. Her research centers the narratives of homeless queer and trans*youth in Los Angeles, California. Cruz’s current projects include gentrification, mobility, surveillance, and the use of geo-spatial applications amongst homeless youth. 

Christa Jackson is a professor in educational studies in the School of Education at Saint Louis University. Her research interests and practice areas center around STEM education, curriculum and literacy, as well as equity in mathematics and STEM education.
