Presenting the 2016 CEHS Awards

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska­–Lincoln will present its annual CEHS awards at 10 a.m., April 22 at the Sheldon Museum of Art, with a reception following. All CEHS faculty, staff, friends and family are invited to attend. The College of Education and Human Sciences is pleased to announce the following award recipients.

Researchers share math program processes during Italy visit

Having concluded the first two years of a project designed to improve the teaching of math in preschool classrooms, UNL researchers recently shared their efforts with a prominent education center in Italy.

UNL faculty Ruth Heaton, Carolyn Pope Edwards and Victoria Molfese spearheaded Math Early On, a project aimed at bolstering the mathematical content knowledge, skills and self-efficacy of preschool teachers and their students.

Nebraskans voice support for early childhood programs, investments

A new study reveals that the vast majority of Nebraskans value and support early care and education and believe more needs to be done to prepare young children for success in school and life. In overwhelming numbers, residents say that high-quality early care and education is not available or affordable for all families in Nebraska.

Buffett Early Childhood Institute to announce statewide survey results

More than 7,100 Nebraskans recently responded to the largest public opinion survey ever conducted in the state about the care and education of young children. Findings of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute/Gallup Survey on Early Childhood Care and Education in Nebraska will be shared from 8:30-10 a.m., March 29 at the Sheldon Museum of Art (note this is a location change) on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Opening remarks will be made by Senator Galen Hadley, speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.

Williams leads massage therapy study in rehabilitation hospital

When Alexis Verzal first arrived at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., her future held many more questions than answers. While her parents Tiffany and Brandon Verzal grappled with these unknowns, this much they knew: their world had been turned upside down.

To help families like the Verzals, researchers from UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences are embarking on a project to reduce stress for primary caregivers whose children are recovering from a severe injury or illness.

Sheree Moser Wins FCCLA Award

Sheree Moser, CYAF Assistant Professor of Practice, has earned the Nebraska Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Distinguished Service Award. 

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding contributions and continuing service by individuals whose primary responsibilities are directly related to the organization’s programs. Dr. Moser volunteers for FCCLA judging and state leadership events and helps organize state conferences.

Eric Unrau Awarded National Child Care Teacher Award

Eric Unrau, CYAF Lecturer, is a 2016 recipient of the Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children's Tylenol National Child Care Teacher Award. This award acknowledges the critical role of child care teachers in providing quality early care and education.

Yolanda Mitchell Earns Parents' Praise

Dr. Yolanda Mitchell, CYAF Assistant Professor of Practice, is a 2016 recipient of the Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to Students from the UNL Teaching Council & UNL Parents Association.

The certificate recognizes UNL faculty, advisors and staff members who make a difference in the day-to-day lives and as well as the academic career of UNL undergraduates. Nomination to receive the certificate comes from the parents of UNL students.

Early Childhood Care Model Replicated in Colombia

A model of early childhood care by Dr. Helen Raikes and grad student Elsa Escalante are being replicated at the Colombian Family Welfare Institute.

The directory of the institute says that the research done by UNL is helping to fix the flaws were preventing the full development of education in early childhood in Colombia.
