The Graduate Minor in Educational Administration gives graduate students across the UNL campus an opportunity to explore their unique interests in educational leadership and higher education during their graduate programs. The minor is particularly relevant for graduate students currently working in, or who aspire to work in, teaching and administrative positions in postsecondary educational institutions.
The EDAD graduate minor is entirely self-designed, in consultation with an EDAD faculty advisor, to meet students’ individual needs. However, some potential areas of concentration within the minor may include:
- Teaching and Learning in Postsecondary Education
- Leading Global and International Education
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Postsecondary Education
- Student Success in Postsecondary Education
Masters degree minor requirements
For students in masters degree programs, minoring in EDAD requires selecting at least 9 credits of EDAD coursework that fit together into a cohesive whole. The students are responsible for articulating how the courses fit together and contribute to their overall learning and professional development.
Doctoral degree minor requirements
For students in doctoral degree programs, minoring in EDAD requires selecting at least 15 credits of EDAD coursework that fit together into a cohesive whole. The student is responsible for articulating how the courses fit together and contribute to their overall learning and professional development.
Doctoral students are required to complete a comprehensive exam in both their major and minor fields of study. In consultation with the student’s major advisor and supervisory committee, the minor advisor will be responsible for administering the comprehensive exam in the EDAD minor. As major comprehensive exams differ widely across different programs, it will be up to the minor advisor, major advisor, and supervisory committee to determine the best way to integrate the EDAD minor into the major comprehensive exam. If it is not possible to administer one comprehensive exam that integrates both the major and the minor, the minor advisor will write one comprehensive examination question prompt drawing on the student’s EDAD coursework.
Adding the Minor to an Existing Graduate Program
All students wishing to minor in EDAD should first consult their primary advisor in their home department to ensure congruence with their existing program.
Masters students wishing to earn a minor in EDAD should contact the EDAD Graduate Chair, who will generally serve as their minor advisor.
Doctoral students wishing to minor in EDAD should review the faculty listed on the EDAD department website to identify one or more potential minor advisors and should reach out directly to those faculty members to gauge their capacity and interest in serving as the minor advisor. Students who have difficulty finding a minor advisor may reach out to the department graduate chair for assistance. For doctoral students, per Graduate Studies policy the minor advisor must be a member of the student’s supervisory committee.
Acceptance into the Minor in Educational Administration is contingent upon the identification of a willing faculty advisor and capacity within the courses the student is proposing to take towards the minor, as determined in consultation with the EDAD Graduate Chair and Graduate Secretary.
