Sonia Manca, a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Janos Zempleni, Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, won First Prize in the Emerging Leaders competition for her work titled “The bioavailability and distribution of bovine milk exosomes are distinct from that of their cargos in mice.” This national recognition was bestowed by the American Society for Nutrition at the Experimental Biology 2017 meeting in Chicago, Illinois. Exomes and their various cargos are novel families of bioactive food compounds that regulate gene expression and metabolism.

Amy Leiferman, a first-year graduate student working in Dr. Janos Zempleni’s lab, has been named one of 12 finalists for the American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN’s) Nutritional Sciences Council 2017 Graduate Student Research Awards Competition – the society’s most prestigious national recognition for students conducting nutrition research. Her abstract is entitled “Dietary Depletion of Bovine Milk Exosomes Elicits Changes in Amino Acid Metabolism in C57BL/6 Mice”.

Dr. Edward Harris, NPOD seed grant recipient and associate professor in UNL’s Department of Biochemistry has secured an NIH R01 award ($1.457 million) for his research in synthetic heparin metabolism.
Janos Zempleni has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 College of Education and Human Sciences Faculty Student Mentoring Award for his contributions and excellence in teaching. His achievements and dedication to student learning and teaching pedagogy were formally recognized at the college award celebration on April 22 at the Sheldon Museum of Art.
Postdoctoral student Jiyoung Kim received a $1,200 Keystone Symposia Scholarship to present her research at a meeting on Obesity and Adipose Tissue Biology, Feb 15 - Feb 19, 2016, in Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta.
