Bohac, Valparaiso math teacher, receives McAuliffe Prize

The Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education, the teaching prize that honors courageous Nebraska teachers, has selected a recipient for this year’s McAuliffe Prize.

After hours of debate, the prize committee has selected Kathy Bohac of Valparaiso, a fourth through seventh grade math teacher at East Butler Public Schools in Brainard, as the first place recipient. Nominated by her superintendent Jim Koontz, she will be awarded $1000, as well as $500 to sponsor East Butler Public School activities.

TLTE graduate tapped for Apple Distinguished Educator program

Jabari Cain, recently TLTE graduated doctoral student, has been designated as an Apple Distinguished Educator for 2011. The Apple Distinguished Educators program was created to "recognize K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using a variety of Apple products to transform teaching and learning."

Cain is assistant professor at Tift College of Education, Mercer University. His research interests include evaluation and learning technologies, technology enhanced instruction, and beliefs and affect toward technology in the classroom.

Terrie Epstein, March 10, 2011: Interpreting National History

In a six year ethnography of a midwestern working class community, the author examined how children’s, adolescents’, and adults’ racial identities and classroom and community pedagogies shaped participants’ interpretations of history and society. Based on research with 100 students, 6 teachers, and 24 parents, the author demonstrates how African American and European American students and adults constructed different perspectives on race relations and individual rights in U.S.history and contemporary society.

CEHS hosts "Making Connections in Science" for Lincoln Public School teachers

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln hosted "Making Connections in Science" with the Lincoln Public Schools on Aug. 16 to provide professional development for LPS science teachers. Professor Jon Pedersen from UNL's Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education and Kirsten Smith, LPS science curriculum specialist, welcomed the teachers and introduced the day's agenda. Smith discussed the new State Standards, a timeline for NeSA-S, and information about the CRTs that will still be administered this year.

CEHS creates strong presence at 2010 American Educational Research Association Conference

Students and faculty members from across CEHS presented dozens of research findings and projects at the AERA conference, held this year in Denver, Colorado.

In all, 37 CEHS researchers shared their work with colleagues from around the world. The presentations showcased CEHS' diverse research programs and how these contribute to everyday educational practice.

Raible recieves 2010 Friend of Children Award

John Raible, assistant professor, TLTE, selected to receive the 2010 Friend of Children Award, presented by the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NCAC). To cite the announcement letter, "There is so much to honor, but it is your diligence, innovation, leadership and commitment to making a difference in the lives of transracial adoptees and their families that has earned you this award."
