The Department of Psychology at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Professor of Psychology position with primary teaching responsibilities in our NEW graduate Specialist-level School Psychology program which aims to enroll its first cohort in Fall 2025. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary (based on experience), and full employee benefits package, with an expected start date in August 2024. Opportunities for summer teaching are available.  

We seek candidates who are interested in supporting the development and implementation of a new graduate Specialist-Level School Psychology training program, aimed to reflect a place-based, culturally-sustaining, scientific-practitioner training model. The candidate’s area of expertise and research are open with the expectation there is an emphasis on P-12 student populations, school-based educational consultation and mental health service delivery. This program will be Alaska’s first and only school psychology degree program, with multiple opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.  

Specific teaching load will depend upon a successful applicant’s expertise and departmental needs. The workload for this position is likely to be 60% teaching (includes both coursework and program development), 20% research, and 20% service to the university, community, and profession. Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current professional ethics, standards and practices related to the field of school psychology 
  • Evidence of commitment to interdisciplinary, school-based mental health
  • Evidence of commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice in teaching, mentoring, and research
  • Ability to build relationships with community and campus partners
  • Potential to establish an independent research program that will build on and add to existing community partnerships
  • Strong potential for pursuing and securing external funding 

Preferred Experience and Education:

  • Experience in working with P - 12 school settings
  • Experience with field or university supervision in school psychology
  • College level teaching experience online and on-campus
  • Experience and interest in Alaska Native context, Alaska Native peoples, and Alaska communities

Required Education or Training:

  • Doctoral degree in School Psychology from an accredited program at the time of hire. ABDs will be considered but employment is contingent on conferral of degree by time of hire in August 2024.
  • Documented experience in working with P - 12 student and family populations.
  • Documented record of research and publication or demonstrated potential for research and publication.
  • Eligible to obtain the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential AND/OR obtain a Alaska Special Services - Type C Endorsement School Psychology

About the Department

The Department of Psychology at the University of Alaska Anchorage offers bachelor (BA/BS), master (MS in Clinical Psychology and ABA), and APA accredited doctorate (PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology) degrees. In addition, the Department offers professional certificates in Children’s Mental Health and Applied Behavior Analysis. The Department prepares graduates: (1) for advanced study in the social and health sciences, and (2) to become members of the Alaska behavioral health and education workforce.

Job Requirements 

Conduct instructional research and service activities as part of the workload.

  • The workload for this position is likely to be 60% teaching, 20% research, and 20% service to the university, community, and profession.
  • Teach primarily graduate courses in the new School Psychology training program with some undergraduate courses, with a typical workload of 3 courses per semester. Undergraduate courses may include Introduction to Psychology, Human Development, Child Development, or Child Psychopathology. Graduate courses will include developing and teaching curriculum in the new School Psychology program with a focus on school-based educational consultation and mental health service delivery.
  • Teaching may also include a combination of assisting with programmatic efforts to obtain NASP accreditation; supervising practicum and internship placements (course credit); and mentoring and advising graduate students in the school psychology program.
  • Faculty member is expected to develop a program of research consistent with their area of specialization in P - 12 student populations, and pursue external funding.
  • Faculty members are to actively participate in service activities: Serving on department, college, and university committees; and providing professional and public service to the department, college, university, community, and profession. Faculty is expected to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse campus environment.
