Position description

The Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, is anticipating the hiring of a tenure-track, assistant or associate professor faculty position in the area of culture, context, and diversity influences on psychopathology and mental health, with an expected start date of July 1, 2024.

This position is within the Clinical Science area of the department, and the successful candidate will serve as a core faculty in the PCSAS-accredited Clinical Science Program (https://psychology.berkeley.edu/students/graduate-program/clinical-science).
Candidates with cross-disciplinary research interests spanning other departmental areas (Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental, Social/Personality) are especially encouraged to apply.
We seek candidates studying how sociocultural factors—broadly defined, including but not limited to: poverty, social class, immigration status, language, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, rural/urban, LGBTQ status, and disability
status—contribute to disparities in mental health, mental health care, and the etiology of psychopathology and mental health problems (broadly defined). We are particularly interested in candidates whose work strives to:
a) understand the sociocultural mechanisms (e.g., structural forms of discrimination, race/ethnicity/ culture-related psychological processes, migration/immigration, acculturation and intercultural contact, language brokering, identity development, biological processes, health-related behaviors, access to mental health services) that might contribute to or modify the persistence of mental health disparities; and/or b) identify modifiable targets to guide the development and testing of novel interventions to reduce mental health disparities.

Prospective applicants should note that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values within the Department of Psychology and across UC Berkeley. Because our excellence can be fully realized only by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values, applicants are asked to provide a statement detailing their commitment to diversity—including their awareness of and understanding of issues surrounding diversity, their track record of engagement and activity in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion,
and belonging in their teaching, research and service, and their specific, concrete goals and plans for advancing these issues as a potential faculty member at Berkeley. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in this area.
More information about the diversity statement and how candidates will be evaluated can be found here: https://ofew.berkeley.edu/recruitment/contributions-deib/support-faculty-candidates.

Specific information about the Psychology Department's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is provided in our Vision Statement, which can be found here:

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit: http://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty.

Considering the significant disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly for disadvantaged groups, in our evaluation of applicants, dips in productivity in otherwise strong records occurring with the onset of the pandemic will be evaluated with the context of the pandemic in mind.
