Applications should be directed to rmehlenb@gmu.edu or asenold@gmu.edu and are due by December 8, 2023.

Postdoctoral Fellow – Young Adult Clinical Psychology

The American Psychological Association (APA) accredited George Mason University (GMU) Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program, is seeking a Young Adult Focused Psychology Postdoctoral Fellow in our training clinic, the GMU Center for Community Mental Health (https://ccmh.gmu.edu/). This is a 1-year full time position, with potential for renewal.

George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

About the Program:

George Mason University is the largest, most diverse public research university in Virginia. The Clinical Psychology Program is committed to training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to meet the evolving roles of clinical psychologists in an evidence-based and antiracist framework. Detailed information about the program, including its mission statement, can be found at https://clinical.gmu.edu/. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented minority groups to apply.

Responsibilities:

Join our Center team to provide evidence-based therapy and testing services to the greater Washington DC community, with a focus on cultural sensitivity, accessibility, and equity. Our Postdoctoral Fellow will have an opportunity to gain experience working with young adults, particularly college aged clients. Specifically, the fellow will engage in comprehensive testing of college students with ADHD, anxiety, depression and other comorbidities, and assist in developing appropriate recommendations for college accomodations. This will include consultation with our colleagues across George Mason University, as well as our psychiatric nurse practitioner. Our Fellow will also learn and offer brief intervention services through our unique stepped care model (https://ccmh.gmu.edu/services) and provide evidence based therapy to young adults seen in our community based clinic. Additional optional experiences include helping supervise doctoral students in our clinical science program or other community-based projects of interest.

Specifically, our Fellow will work at the CCMH full time, dividing your time between comprehensive testing and therapy for young adults. The Fellow will complete approximately two comprehensive assessments per month, with a young adult/college age focus. In addition, you will carry a caseload of approximately 4 clients for evidence based therapy, while reserving 2 hours/week for brief intervention clients. You will have the opportunity to see a range of clients presenting with different issues, including clients who self identify with a range of identities. There are additional opportunities to participate in monthly interdisciplinary case conferences with our psychiatric nurse practitioner colleagues who collaborate with us to provide sliding scale psychopharmacological services to our Center clients. This is a great opportunity to gain hours for licensure and hone both primary care and specialty care skills. Supervision will be provided by a minimum of two supervisors, one for testing and one for therapy. All focus will be on young adults.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology from an APA-accredited program by the start date of the position; completion of an APA-accredited predoctoral internship; and prior experience with both therapy and testing of children/adolescents. All degree requirements, including dissertation defense, must be completed prior to beginning fellowship. The stipend for the 2024-2025 Fellowship year is $61,500.

Note: Because this position involves working with minors, university policy requires a criminal background check prior to employment.

Deadline for applications is Friday, December 8, 2023. Interviews will be completed virtually for this training year. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit the following:

1. Cover letter

2. Curriculum Vitae

3. Graduate School Transcript (does not need to be an official transcript)
