Postdoctoral Fellowship in Childhood Trauma

Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress

Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

The Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress (CCFTS) is an outpatient mental health clinic within the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a specialty pediatric hospital located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Kennedy Krieger Institute is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, through which fellows receive their training appointments. Clients of CCFTS consist mainly of urban youth and families, predominantly of Black American origin. CCFTS is dedicated to providing high quality, culturally relevant consumer driven and comprehensive services, for individuals and their families affected by or at risk for psychological trauma. Central to the mission are the development of preventive programs, specialized clinical care, community engagement, advocacy, research and training provided in the clinic.

Candidates with experience in evidence-based, trauma-informed assessment and treatment are encouraged to apply.

The postdoctoral fellowship is an APPIC member, one-year program that runs from September through August and is located at the CCFTS facility throughout the training year. The stipend for the 2024-2025 academic year is $56,484 with vacation, sick leave, and professional leave benefits in addition to a $500 allowance for conference attendance.

Certified national trainers in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) provide didactic and consultation sessions in this model. The fellow also receives training and supervision in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Trainees are encouraged to complete requirements for national certification in TF-CBT and PCIT.

The fellow also attends regular case conference and group supervision meetings for clinicians practicing particular modalities and treatment approaches. The fellow chooses to concentrate on one or more of these treatment approaches. The fellow supervises two psychology interns on scoring and interpreting psychological tests, and is supervised in this endeavor by a senior licensed psychologist. The fellow is expected to provide at least 18 hours of direct clinical service per week, and a 4 hour block is reserved for research activities.
