POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN ACUTE PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT

Nationwide Children’s Hospital & The Ohio State University College of Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Psychology and Neuropsychology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital seeks applicants interested in opportunities to specialize in the area of acute psychiatric care. We anticipate the availability of 2 one-year fellowship positions starting in the summer or fall of 2024 (start dates available in either early July or late August).

The Psychology Pediatric Acute Treatment (PAT) post-doctoral fellowship program provides clinical experiences to develop advanced competencies in the specialty area of acute psychiatric care. The fellowship experience provides training in empirically supported assessment and treatment of children and adolescents who present with serious mental illness, and complex behavioral problems in the context of acute psychiatry services. Our goal is to train psychologists to demonstrate leadership in the areas of clinical service, research, and excellence in the provision of care for youth and families with serious mental illness in the context of acute psychiatric services.

The postdoctoral fellows will have opportunities to provide consultation services to the inpatient psychiatric and medical units, the Psychiatric Crisis Department (PCD), and the Psychiatry Consult Liaison service. This may include crisis-focused individual and family interventions, risk and lethality assessments, and diagnostic assessments. Fellows will facilitate evidence-based skills groups (e.g. DBT, CBT) on the inpatient psychiatric units. Additional training opportunities are available in specialized intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization (PHP) programming as well as treatment of traumarelated concerns through clinic and short-term treatment models.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the fellows will participate in inter-disciplinary rounds and case conferences. They will engage in bi-weekly acute-care-specific didactics covering several topics (e.g., DBT, crisis conceptualization, suicide risk management with ethnic minority youth, behavior management in acute settings). Program development projects will be encouraged during the fellowship year in collaboration with other disciplines aimed at improving the quality of services on the inpatient units. Opportunities for umbrella supervision with a psychology intern will be available.

Our postdoctoral fellowship is located in the Behavioral Health Pavilion, America's largest pediatric hospital devoted exclusively to the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with behavioral health complexities. The hospital uniquely integrates acute behavioral health services with intensive outpatient programs. The Division of Pediatric Psychology and Neuropsychology is fully integrated into pediatric subspecialty areas and the Behavioral Health Pavilion and has close working relationships with both hospital-based and community pediatrician specialists. Although clinical and educational activities are the primary focus of the fellowship, research and other scholarly activity will be encouraged, and opportunities exist for collaborative research in established projects.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the nation’s fifth largest freestanding children’s hospital in the United States and provides the majority of pediatric behavioral health care services and training opportunities in Central Ohio, serving a population of over 3 million. Our institution employs over 125 psychologists, with 8 faculty psychologists dedicated to clinical training in acute care through the PAT track.
