Our program is designed to provide clinical and research experiences necessary to support independent practice in pediatric and clinical child psychology and advanced training for a career within an academic medical setting/hospital.
Pediatric Psychology, special focus in Consultation-Liaison and Hematology/Oncology/BMT
The Pediatric Psychology fellowship program provides specialized training working with youth and their families experiencing chronic and/or acute illness. Focus is placed on evidence-based assessment and intervention to support adaptation/coping with illness, improving quality of life, addressing concerns regarding treatment adherence, acute and chronic pain management, and diagnosing/treating psychological comorbidities. This position will include both inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences, equally divided between consultation-liaison/generalist ped psych services and hematology/oncology/BMT. This program provides in depth training facilitating opportunity for specialization in hem/onc. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to become an integrated member on interdisciplinary treatment teams through minor rotations offered in several of the outpatient subspecialty medical clinics. Numerous research opportunities exist, and advanced training in evidence-based treatment modalities are provided.
Pediatric Psychology, special focus in Consultation-Liaison and Pain
This fellowship track will provide specialized training in the assessment and treatment of youth experiencing chronic and/or acute chronic illness through inpatient, outpatient, and multiple interdisciplinary medical specialty clinic experiences. The fellow’s time is equally divided between the consultation-liaison/generalist ped psych service and the pain psychology program. This program provides both breadth of experience working with patients presenting with diverse medical conditions, and opportunity to gain advanced training in the treatment of chronic pain in children and their families. The fellow will obtain training in multiple biofeedback modalities and have the opportunity to contribute to inpatient clinical pathway and program development. The fellowship program provides extensive training and experience with interdisciplinary teams and positions fellows for a career in academic medicine and working with patients and their families experiencing chronic health conditions and co-occurring mental health concerns.
Pediatric Psychology, special focus in Consultation-Liaison and Eating Disorders
The fellow’s time is equally divided between the consultation-liaison/generalist ped psych service and the eating disorder program. This program provides both breadth of experience working with patients presenting with diverse medical conditions (including both acute and chronic illnesses as well as injury), and opportunity to gain advanced training in the treatment of eating disorders in children and their families. The fellow will obtain training in multiple evidence-based treatments including Family Based Treatment (FBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RO-DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ARFID. The fellowship program provides extensive training and experience with interdisciplinary teams and positions fellows for a career in academic medicine and working with patients and their families experiencing chronic health conditions and co-occurring mental health concerns.
Pediatric Psychology, Grant-funded Hem/Onc/BMT position with additional focus on PCIT in pediatric oncology
The fellow selected for this fellowship will join a grant-funded intervention evaluating cultural adaptations to PCIT in pediatric oncology. This fellow will engage in a variety of clinical and research activities. In addition to conducting PCIT interventions as part of the grant-funded study, clinical activities will include (1) carrying a small pediatric hematology/oncology clinical case load of youth who are birth-22 years of age, and (2) collaboration with multidisciplinary teams during comprehensive hematology/oncology outpatient clinics. The fellow will receive specialized training and certification in PCIT as part of the grant-funded study. This fellow will have numerous publication opportunities based on existing datasets. These datasets represent studies related to parenting and sibling adjustment in pediatric hematology/oncology, healthcare among minoritized groups, adaptations of evidence-based interventions for pediatric hematology/oncology samples, and motivational interviewing dissemination. Additional opportunities will include advanced motivational interviewing training, grant-writing mentorship, hematology/oncology-specific education and inpatient clinical work.
Autism Spectrum Disorder/Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
The Autism Spectrum Disorder/Neurodevelopmental Disabilities fellowship program provides high-quality, family-centered care with a specialization in autism/neurodevelopmental disabilities. Fellows will be well positioned for a career providing evidence-based assessment and intervention services for children and adolescents with ASD/NDD. Fellows in this program will work with youth and their families focusing on early detection, differential diagnosis, and intervention for children with developmental disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Global Developmental Delay, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Disorders, Communication Disorders, disruptive behaviors, and less frequently, internalizing disorders. Focus is placed on evidence-based assessment and intervention. The position will include primarily outpatient clinical experiences, including working as an integrated member on interdisciplinary evaluation teams at the JHACH Autism Program. Inpatient consultation opportunities are available. Additional opportunities will include participating in evidence-based intervention services (e.g., behavioral parent training, group-based behavioral parent training).
The JHACH fellowship program provides opportunities for all fellows to gain umbrella supervisory experiences with psychology interns for assessment and intervention, as well as graduate and undergraduate students for research. Fellows will participate in scheduled didactics, including Pediatric Grand Rounds, Pediatric Psychology Table Rounds, Supervision Seminar, and a Professional Development series. All fellows have the opportunity to participate in advanced motivational interviewing training. There is an expectation for involvement in collaborative research, with goal of producing 1-2 scholarly works, whether a peer-reviewed paper, presentation at a national conference, or grant submission. A fellow may elect to engage in program development to satisfy this requirement. All fellows are expected to meet the requirements for Florida licensure by the end of the fellowship year.
Eligibility
Applicants from APA- or CPA-accredited programs in clinical, school or counseling will be considered for the position. Preference provided to those applicants with pediatric psychology experience and an interest working in a hospital-based setting. Completion of an APA-accredited internship, and all requirements for graduation/conferment of doctoral degree prior to start date is required (August 12, 2024, with flexible start depending on internship end).
