The School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (SPBS) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale announces two open tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Clinical Psychology. Candidates of advanced assistant or associate professor standing with interest in serving as the program’s Director of Training will be considered for hire at an advanced level. Specifically, we seek to hire two candidates who can contribute to one of our two specialty tracks – Child or Adult clinical psychology. Area of research specialization is open, but candidates are expected to conduct productive and programmatic research and compete for extramural research funding. The workload for this position is typically two courses per semester. Candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate psychology courses, with preference given to candidates that can teach one or more of the following courses: Clinical Skills, Psychological Assessment, Child Behavior Therapy, or Ethics. Competitive candidates will be able to supervise graduate students in practicum and are expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates must receive their Ph.D. from an APA-accredited program by August 2024.

The anticipated starting date for both positions is August 16, 2024. Promising new faculty in the College of Health and Human Sciences are offered competitive startup packages, including graduate/undergraduate research assistant support, course releases, and summer salary designed to jumpstart research scholarship.

The clinical program is accredited by APA. There are opportunities to collaborate with colleagues specializing in the areas of anxiety treatment, autism, forensic psychology/corrections, multicultural psychology, parenting, violence prevention, and neuropsychology among others. We have university-based centers offering contracted services for clients referred by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Rehabilitation Services, Probation departments, and from behavioral health agencies across the region. There are also opportunities to work with the university’s autism center, rural community mental health centers, substance use and neurorehabilitation facilities, SIU School of Medicine, the Bureau of Prisons, and juvenile justice facilities.

Postdoctoral experience and eligibility for license as a Clinical Psychologist in Illinois are preferred. We are particularly interested in applicants who can serve as a mentor and role model for students in this program which is highly diverse and values social justice. The Carbondale area is beautifully nested between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and is home to the Shawnee National Forest and several state parks, with a low cost of living, temperate climate, and excellent schools. It is surrounded by lakes, rivers, wineries, and breweries. We are within 2 hours from St. Louis, 3-4 hours from Memphis and Nashville, and 5 hours from Chicago.
