Dr. Michael J. Merten serves as the Chair and G.A. Newkirk Professor of Leadership in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Joining the university on July 1, 2020, he brought extensive experience from his previous roles as Director of the Center for Family Resilience and Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Oklahoma State University.

As an interdisciplinary family scientist, Dr. Merten's research focuses on the determinants of youth and young adult development, emphasizing psychosocial and health outcomes within family and community contexts.

He has successfully collaborated with professionals across various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, nutritional science, toxicology, epidemiology, and economics.

His research endeavors have garnered support from prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Dr. Merten holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a doctorate in human development and family studies from Iowa State University.

His leadership and research continue to significantly impact the well-being of children, youth, and families.
