Participating in teaching and research is an important part of the professional development of graduate students in the Department of Educational Psychology. Several graduate research and teaching assistantships are available through the department and the Oscar and Luella Buros Center for Testing. These are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified students. Students must be proactive in their search for assistantships. Typically, 90% of graduate students in EDPS seeking assistantships are able to obtain funding. Please make note that, while most students prefer an assistantship within their home department, you may obtain an assistantship anywhere on campus. For example, EDPS Graduate students have applied for and been awarded assistantships in the office of Graduate Studies; Child, Youth, & Family Studies; and other departments across campus.
It is the responsibility of each student to pursue funding. Admission to the Department of Educational Psychology does not guarantee funding or an assistantship.
Most assistantships include tuition remission (up to 12 credits per semester and in some cases 12 credit hours in the summer) during the semester of the appointment. The assistantships typically require 13 (0.33FTE) to 19 (0.49FTE) hours of service per week. Some graduate assistantships are available during the summer sessions as well; however, most assistantships and fellowships are awarded for fall and spring semesters. Other assistantship opportunities/funding opportunities are listed in the department’s newsletter, “Weekly Wednesday” and are archived here: https://cehs.unl.edu/edpsych/weekly-wednesday/
Faculty do their very best to secure funding for the department’s graduate students, but the availability of funding varies from year to year, and the level of funding varies depending on the funding source and the differing responsibilities of the graduate assistants. Despite our efforts, we are not able to guarantee that we will be able to secure funding for all graduate students. Because most assistantships are for a single academic year, we depend on the graduate students to seek out and apply for assistantships and fellowships for each subsequent academic year.
For more information concerning graduate assistantships contact your program director. Program directors are listed on the websites for each program area.
All available assistantships within the Department of Educational Psychology for Academic Year 2025-2026 will be posted by March 1st. Students will have until March 14th to apply.
