CEHS Student Research Conference Nov. 12

November 12 marks the day of the annual CEHS Student Research Conference. CEHS undergraduate and graduate students will share their work with fellow students, educators, and community members. The conference's purpose is to give students an opportunity to showcase their work and engage peers and mentors in important issues related to education and the human sciences. Poster and paper presentations will be presented.

TCD's Apparel Design Studio Renovation Completed

The summer-long renovation of the main TCD apparel design studio reached completion just as classes began on August 22 and TCD's fashion design majors have quickly made themselves comfortable in their new digs. Features include enlarged workstations, each outfitted with completely retractable sewing machine mounts, drop leaves, and fabric tube storage. The workstations, each accommodating two students, are several inches higher than the models they replace, providing improved ergonomic benefit.

"Practical Ways to Deal with Bullying Inside and Outside the Classroom"

Saturday, November 5, Susan Swearer (CEHS) will discuss practical resources parents and teachers can use to address bullying, many from her book entitled "Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Realistic Strategies for schools." Additionally, RESPECT2, an educational organization located in Omaha, will use theater and role-playing activities to address issues of bullying and harassment. The workshop is provided in conjunction with the matinee and evening performance of Shape of a Girl at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Vandeyar will present keynote speech November 3

Saloshna Vandeyar will present the keynote speech for the Student Research Conference on November 3 at 6:00pm in 105 Teachers College Hall. Her current scholarship focuses on implications of teacher and student identities in constructing classrooms inclusive of racial, linguistic, and ethnic identity

Vandeyar's presentation precedes the student conference, which is November 12.

CEHS culinology students take top prize at Nebraska Local Foods Network Chef Challenge

Three CEHS culinology students were named winners in a high-energy, high-pressure chef's challenge October 6. The three CEHS students included Sophomore Culinology Michael Garcia, Senior Culinology major Joshua Hobbs, and Senior Culinology major Amanda Vuu. Two other teams participated in the challenge, one from Southeast Community College at Lincoln, and Metro Community College at Omaha.

Staff Council brown bag: My big fat greekinese experience

Lisa King will speak about her recent CEHS sponsored trip to China. While in China, she had opportunities to engage Chinese culture, and she will share what she has learned. King was part of a faculty and staff group that that is working on a collaborative International Family Sciences Masters Specialization between Nebraska and five other countries.

King will also discuss a mini-course she took this summer on Greek culture.  The course was available at UNL and taught by a faculty member also involved in the International Masters Specialization.
