CEHS turns biowaste into industrial products

Yiqi Yang, Professor Textiles, Clothing, and Design, was interviewed recently by the BBC regarding his work with biowaste and plastics.

The BBC reports, "But the work presented by Yiqi Yang, from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, takes this idea further and uses the chicken feather fibres themselves as a principal ingredient - making up 50% of the mass of the composite.

As a result, the plastics require less of the materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene that are derived from petroleum products."

RUSA selects BUROS Test Reviews Onlne as a "Best Free Reference Web Site"

According to Reference and User Services Association , BUROS Test Reviews Online, "helps users identify tests and instruments used in education, business, psychology, etc. Ways to search the Reviews include an alphabetical search, a category search, and a keyword search. The online index provides author, title, purpose of the measure, publisher address and other contact information, along with a cross-reference to the volume and page of the review in Mental Measurements Yearbook (1985-present).

TLTE graduate tapped for Apple Distinguished Educator program

Jabari Cain, recently TLTE graduated doctoral student, has been designated as an Apple Distinguished Educator for 2011. The Apple Distinguished Educators program was created to "recognize K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using a variety of Apple products to transform teaching and learning."

Cain is assistant professor at Tift College of Education, Mercer University. His research interests include evaluation and learning technologies, technology enhanced instruction, and beliefs and affect toward technology in the classroom.

Bohac, Valparaiso math teacher, receives McAuliffe Prize

The Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education, the teaching prize that honors courageous Nebraska teachers, has selected a recipient for this year’s McAuliffe Prize.

After hours of debate, the prize committee has selected Kathy Bohac of Valparaiso, a fourth through seventh grade math teacher at East Butler Public Schools in Brainard, as the first place recipient. Nominated by her superintendent Jim Koontz, she will be awarded $1000, as well as $500 to sponsor East Butler Public School activities.

Department of Defense teams with CEHS to help military families

On Wednesday, March 9, UNL Extension formally announced that the Division has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop content and provide educational programming for children of military families who live off-base. Tonia Durden, Assistant Professor, Child, Youth & Family Studies Department, and Kathleen Lodl, Assistant Dean, Cooperative Extension Division, will lead the project.

Qingdao University Associate Professor in TCD as Visiting Scholar

Associate Professor Qin de Qing, TCD Visiting Scholar from Qingdao University, China

Associate Professor Qin de Qing ("Gina"), Vice Dean in the Department of Textile and Fashion Design at Qingdao University in China, recently settled into TCD as a visiting scholar for a semester-long residency. Professor Qin's research and creative work emphasizes fiber art and the transformation of specific fabrics into 3-d structural forms, and this will be the area on which she focuses during her time on the UNL campus.
