Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic
The Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic provides services for individuals with speech, language, hearing and balance impairments. Clinic providers serve all ages and address a broad range of disorders. Services are provided by licensed and ASHA-certified speech-language pathology and audiology faculty members and graduate student clinicians in our speech-language pathology and audiology training programs.
Hearing Aid Banks
The Barkley Memorial Center is home to all three of Nebraska's Hearing Aid Banks: 1) HearU Nebraska provides hearing aids to children ages 0-18 with priority to newly identified children ages 0-3. 2) Lions Hearing Aid Bank provides refurbished monaural or binaural BTE hearing aids to individuals 19-64 years of age. 3) Sertoma Hearing Aid Bank provides one refurbished BTE hearing aid to individuals age 65 or older. A second hearing aid can be purchased for $100.
Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center
The Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center was founded in 2004 to provide reading and writing tutoring to children in the community. Tutoring is provided by UNL graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Education and Human Sciences, under the direction of UNL faculty and certified teachers. Instruction is individualized and based on assessments given by the tutors.
Schmieding Academy for Hearing Healthcare
Opened in the fall of 2021, the Schmieding Academy of Hearing Healthcare is a state-of-the-art audiology training space that can be used to foster, build and enhance collaboration. The training space features five adult and two pediatric AHead Simulators, used to provide students with opportunities for simulated learning to build their clinical skills. Students are able to practice otoscopy, earmold impressions, hearing aid fittings and verification.
AAC Center
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an area of clinical practice that attempts to compensate for or supplement either temporarily or permanently the impairment, activity and participation patterns of individuals who have difficulty receiving or expressing their desired messages. This site provides resources and materials for people to learn more about and successfully implement the use of all kinds of AAC.
Cognitive Strategy Instruction
Strategy instruction is one of the most effective ways of improving academic performance for children with learning difficulties. This site will show you how to do it, provide examples or strategies, and provide a forum to discuss your experiences and questions. This web site was made possible by a Comprehensive System of Personnel Development grant from the Nebraska Department of Education.
Student Engagement Project
The Student Engagement Project provides materials to assist educators for school improvement or individual student planning – in order to increase engagement, improve student behavior & academics, and reduce exclusionary discipline & dropout within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework.
