Pam Bazis joined the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln as an assistant professor in August 2023.
Pam is interested in the interdependent nature of reading and writing cognitive processes and the connection in efficient, effective instructional practices. Her research focuses on developing and testing interventions and instructional strategies that increase foundational literacy skills for elementary students and the teachers working with those students.
She comes to Nebraska after two years as an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she led projects focused on assessment for students with dysgraphia and language-based learning difficulties and an integrated intervention that combines handwriting, word reading, and writing skills for students experiencing difficulty mastering foundational literacy skills. She actively collaborates with the Tennessee Reading Research Center to create literacy resources for teachers, parents, and children.
She is a co-investigator on the WORDS Project (Workshops on Reading Development Strategies), a research-focused professional development program aimed at improving early literacy skills across Nebraska. This project is co-funded by the Institute of Education Sciences and the Nebraska Department of Education.
Before moving into post-secondary education, Pam served in several instructional and supervisory roles at the K-12 level, including classroom teacher, reading specialist, instructional coach, and district dyslexia coordinator. She is an ALTA Certified Academic Language Therapist and Qualified Instructor, providing professional development to elementary teachers on evidence-based reading and writing practices.
