M3 INITIATIVE

Mission:

The Future Teachers of Color org. aims to create a welcoming space for students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to connect, share experiences, and support one another. The group strives to enhance academic and personal development through cultural exchange, advocacy, and community-building activities.
 

Objectives:

1. Foster Community: Provide a fun and inclusive environment where students can build solidarity, share their unique experiences, and celebrate both their cultural heritages and their interests in education and human sciences.
2. Promote Racial Literacy and Cultural Competence: Organize events and activities that educate and engage both members and the broader campus community in understanding and valuing diverse cultural perspectives and practices.
3. Foster Critical Dialogue: Create spaces for open, critical discussions about identity, power, and privilege, encouraging members to engage in self-reflection and collective action.
4. Support Holistic Success: Provide resources and support that address both academic and personal challenges faced by members, ensuring a comprehensive approach to student well-being.
5. Encourage Personal Growth: Provide opportunities for leadership development, networking, and personal growth through workshops, seminars, and social events.
    

Activities:

• Social and Professional Networking Opportunities: Arrange social events for FTOC within the College of Education and Human Sciences, as well as networking events with education professionals and alumni from diverse backgrounds to offer career advice and mentorship.
• Education and Outreach Events: Host and participate in local school and community events to showcase different aspects of culture, and language, education, and teaching as a profession.
• Workshops and Panels: Organize and/or support educational workshops, panels, and conferences that focus on topics such as teacher diversification, Black, Indigenous and Students of Color (BIPoC) identities in education, intercultural communication, language learning strategies, and navigating college as first generation and students of Color.
• Study Groups and Tutoring: Organize and facilitate study sessions and peer mentor support to help members navigate their academic and personal experiences while advocating for their needs within the university.
• Community Service: Engage in service projects that support local communities and address issues related to diversity and inclusion.
   

Membership:

Annual Dues: $5.00

Membership is open to all undergraduate students who are committed to advancing social justice and inclusivity. We especially encourage participation from those who are marginalized or underrepresented, as well as allies who are dedicated to learning and contributing to these efforts.
 

Leadership:

With the support of their advisor, this group is led by a diverse team of student volunteers who represent a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Leadership roles include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and Primary Programmer. These leaders work together to plan and execute the group’s initiatives and ensure its alignment with its mission.
 

Overall, the FTOC org. serves as a dynamic and supportive network that enriches the university experience for culturally and linguistically diverse students pursuing degrees in education, helping them thrive both academically and personally.
