Dr. Scharmann specializes in science teacher education, focusing on nature of science issues with specific emphasis on the instructional role of science theories (specifically evolution education). His contributions concerning evolution education have been independently acknowledged by both the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (in 2010) and the Association of Science Teacher Educators (in 1994).
