Trainin and Nugent join Husker team to strengthen Nebraska’s K-8 computer science curriculum

Everyone’s heard of “three R’s” of education: reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic.

The phrase was coined in the 19th century to describe the subjects foundational to public schooling, and many still consider them the mainstays of education. But University of Nebraska–Lincoln researcher Leen-Kiat Sohsays it’s time to add another discipline to the list: computer science.

TLTE graduate student Connor Bohlken was selected for the prestigious Knowles Teaching Fellows Program. The five-year fellowship is designed to assist and sustain new teachers in math and science with leadership development, practitioner inquiry and community-building.

TLTE’s Hamann recognized for support of Lincoln High

Ted Hamann, professor of teaching, learning and teacher education in the College of Education and Human Sciences, will be awarded with the first ever Spotlight Award from the Lincoln Education Association at a May 17 recognition event in Lincoln.  LEA is the Lincoln affiliate of the Nebraska State Education Association.

Lincoln Southwest teacher selected as 2018 Battey Award recipient

Lincoln Southwest High School English/journalism teacher Brandi Benson has been selected as the 2018 Frieda Battey Distinguished Educator Award, presented by the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Benson will receive the honor May 11 at a luncheon in Nebraska’s Memorial Union.

Jessica Horan, a May Nebraska graduate in family and consumer sciences education, nominated her former yearbook teacher for the Battey Award and says she thinks about Benson every week.

NSF Noyce grant to establish NebraskaSTEM program for rural elementary teachers

Up to 15 rural Nebraska elementary teachers are being sought to participate in the NebraskaSTEM leadership development program that begins this summer at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Funded by a National Science Foundation Robert Noyce grant, participants will receive stipends to help pay the tuition and living costs of completing a 14-month master’s degree in elementary education with a specialization in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Hamann and Mexican colleagues honored by AERA

A binational research team, including University of Nebraska–Lincoln professor Edmund “Ted” Hamann, will be recognized April 16 for its work to identify and transform the conditions of schooling for thousands of transnationally mobile children and youth. Hamann and his colleagues Víctor Zúñiga, professor, Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), and Juan Sánchez García, research director at the Mexican state of Nuevo León’s Institute for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education (known as IIIEPE), will be presented with the Henry T.

Catalano selected for Swanson Award

The College of Education and Human Sciences has selected Theresa Catalano, associate professor of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE), as the 2018 Donald R. & Mary Lee Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence recipient. Catalano will be formally recognized at an awards luncheon April 6. Funded by a generous gift from Donald R. Swanson, the award honors exemplary teaching in CEHS and carries a $12,500 cash award.

Graduate education programs at UNL ranked No. 40 nationally

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s graduate education program jumped three spots and is ranked No. 40 in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report national rankings that were announced March 20.

Nebraska graduate education programs are housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences. Programs evaluated for this ranking include master’s, specialist, Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees in the departments of Child, Youth and Family Studies; Educational Administration; Educational Psychology; Special Education and Communication Disorders; and Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.

All CEHS students, faculty, staff, alumni and others are invited to attend one of two learning and feedback sessions this Thursday, March 8 regarding the construction of a new Mabel Lee Hall. The college would like  input to help design a building that will serve students, faculty, staff and stakeholders well into the 21st century.
