As a lifelong Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) teacher, my professional experiences here began in 2009. Prior to being hired here, I taught at the middle and high school for 20 years, as well as holding a leadership positon in curriculum in Lincoln Public Schools for an additional eight. I feel strongly about professional participation and have been highly involved since the mid-1980s. I currently serve as the UNL student unit adviser for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) and advocate of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) student organization. Students are encouraged to participate in community service, judging, and supporting projects sponsored by each organization along with coursework.
Past teaching experiences have also included working with at-risk and marginalized youth, diverse populations, and a wide variety of community organizations. Some of the innovative programs I have been involved in during my tenure include establishing a childcare program for high school pregnant and parenting teens, the ProStart Restaurant Association program pilot and implementation in all 7 high schools, the LPS Culinary Competition (in its 15th year), and coordinating curriculum for FCS, Health Sciences, and the student-parent program.
Currently I am teaching and coordinating the FCS education program on campus at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes all of the methods, curriculum, practicum, and student teaching experiences for the students on campus, and the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA) master’s degree online classes. These have included FCS history and philosophy, leadership, administration, advanced methods, research, practicum, and student teaching.
To promote and build the FCS Education program here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I have worked with the Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers of Nebraska (FCSTN), FCCLA, and this department to recruit at local and state conferences, give presentations, mentor new teachers throughout the state, and nation. I have worked with the Nebraska Department of Education to keep track of openings within the state since 2011, began a Retired FCS Teacher Network and support a Future FCS Teacher Dinner each year with donations from the group. The FCCLA State Adviser has also worked to establish competitive events for FCS education with a scholarship to attend UNL.
Teaching is my passion and being a teacher-educator has truly been my dream job. I am currently working on a terminal degree through the department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education within the Carnegie Program for the Educational Doctorate. My dissertation will identify interventions to support struggling student teachers so they can be more successful, especially within FCS and all Career and Technical Education programs here at UNL. I am on track to graduate in December of 2020.
