Individuals who are interested in joining the Aphasia Support Group should contact Judy Harvey for more information.
Mission
Our main purpose is to provide community, social opportunity, and conversational support for individuals whose communication is limited by aphasia. We will provide speech and language support, technology, and expertise to facilitate communication across a wide variety of topics including aphasia and health, but more importantly – everyday topics such as current events, family, sports, hobbies, arts and entertainment…etc. Participants will have the opportunity to make connections by sharing their experiences, opinions, and questions with group members.
What is aphasia?
Aphasia is a life-changing condition that affects not only communication, but also a person's work, recreation, friendships and family roles. Aphasia is often a chronic condition. People with aphasia, on average, have nine fewer social contacts and three fewer social activities than their non-aphasia peers.
Who's it for?
Individuals who are:
· Able and willing to attend 8 to 10 weekly sessions for 75 minutes each (Tuesdays 10-11:15 A.M.)
· Willing to participate in discussions and use strategies and techniques that enhance communication
· Interested in meeting and making connections with others who live with aphasia
Participants will be working with speech language pathologists, as well as graduate speech language pathology students in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders.
