Dev, Fischer and Guerrero honored by IANR

IANR Harlan Vice Chancellor Mike Boehm presented awards to three CEHS colleagues on Dec. 1 at an awards luncheon in the Nebraska East Union. “People are IANR’s greatest asset,” said Boehm. “We salute these faculty and staff for their dedication in advancing our mission of teaching, research and outreach.”

Dipti Dev, Betti and Richard Robinson Professorship of Early Childhood in Extension and Assistant Professor and Child Health Behaviors Extension Specialist, was awarded the Dinsdale Family Faculty Award at the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources Annual Awards Luncheon on December first.

Hatton-Bowers receives award for innovative research in early childhood education

Holly Hatton-Bowers, an assistant professor in child, youth, and family studies and an early childhood extension specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was presented the Innovative Extension New Employee Award for her contributions to professional development programming for early childhood education teachers at the Extension Fall Conference 2017. This award recognizes innovation in research in the first five years of service.

CYAF's Xia selected for national mentoring award

Yan Ruth Xia, professor of Child, Youth and Family Studies, has received the Felix Berardo Scholarship Award for Mentoring. Annually awarded by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), this national award recognizes mentors who exceed classroom teaching expectations to support undergraduate and graduate students, mentor junior colleagues, and provide opportunities for continued professional development in the family field.

International Seed Grant proposals due Dec. 18

Through a generous donor grant, CEHS has funds available to enhance instruction and research through attention to international work and issues. Proposals are being solicited from faculty and staff to support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote our international goals.

Dev identifies barriers and strategies to engage parents about nutrition

Engaged parents are critical to raising successful children, and child care providers can be an important conduit for parent education that can make a difference in the lives of children. Nutrition education is a good example. But research led by Dipti Dev, assistant professor of Child, Youth and Family Studies, has found that some child care providers do not feel confident educating parents.

Young families invited to participate in Full STEAM Ahead Oct. 29

Families with young children are invited to Full STEAM Ahead, Oct. 29, 1-4 p.m. at the East Campus Union Arbor Suite. The free event, sponsored by the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies, features interactive activities in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics using nature and the outdoors. Education abroad students from East China Normal University will also share their culture while facilitating STEAM activities. Registration is not required.

Home is where the heart is at Ruth Staples Child Development Lab

You got to have heart. No, really. We’ve got to get a heart! That was the spontaneous rally cry of the Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory community last week at the Nebraska by Heart open house in Haymarket Park. Parents and staff of the child center, located on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s East Campus and part of the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies, decided at the last minute to bid on one of the hearts from the public art project that commemorates Nebraska’s 150th anniversary of statehood.

Helen and Ron Raikes honored with Abbott Award

Helen Raikes, Willa Cather Professor of Child, Youth and Family Studies (CYAF), and her late husband, former Nebraska State Senator Ron Raikes, will be recognized Oct. 10 with the Grace Abbott Award from the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation. The honor will be presented at the Nebraska Children and Family Foundation's Changemakers luncheon at the Embassy Suites in La Vista, Nebraska.
