You will develop specific learning objectives and goals and work with a UNL faculty member who evaluates your internship and guides you during the experience. Where else can you go to complete three (3) Internships totaling 700 hours over the course of your college career?
Hospitality Management Internship Series
HRTM 172 – Field Experience in Hospitality Management
Course Requirements: HRTM 172 is the first internship experience in the Hospitality Management Internship series. This course is an approved supervised individual field experience in hospitality management employment (150 hours) with a qualified cooperating practicing professional within the Hospitality Industry (Club Management, Food & Beverage; Lodging; Human Resources; Event Planning; Tourism). Fieldwork experiences will not be approved for bar tending positions unless 70% of the business revenue is earned from the service of food. Hours must be completed during the semester enrolled. The establishment and completion of coursework for HRTM 172 includes the following assignments: cover letter, initial resume and reference list; work experience agreement; position (job) description; establishment of at least three learning objectives (job duties) based on the position description; one employment update; final paper; documentation of fieldwork hours; supervisor evaluation and updated resume. The final paper (reflective) is focused on learning objectives; guest expectations; hospitality industry culture; expectations; workforce; professional growth and development achieved; future growth and development needs to be accomplished; career path to achieve first professional management position.
HRTM 397 –Internship in Hospitality Management Supervision
Course Requirements: HRTM 397 is the second internship experience in the Hospitality Management Internship series. This course is an approved and supervised entry-level supervisory experience in hospitality management (150 hours) within the Hospitality Industry (Club Management, Food & Beverage; Lodging; Human Resources; Event Planning; Tourism) supervising the performance or operation of a person or group. Hours must be completed during the semester enrolled. The establishment and completion of coursework for HRTM 397 includes the following assignments: initial cover letter, resume and reference list; work experience agreement; position description; establishment of at least three learning objectives (job duties) based on position description; one employment update; final paper; documentation of fieldwork hours; supervisor evaluation and updated resume. The final paper (reflective) is focused on learning objectives; guest expectations; hospitality industry culture; expectations; workforce; professional growth and development achieved; future growth and development needs to be accomplished; career path to achieve first professional management position.
HRTM 476 – Internship in Hospitality Management
Course Requirements: This is the final (capstone) internship in the Hospitality Management Internship series. The purpose of the final internship is for the student to develop or apply the necessary skills to function as an entry level manager in the hospitality industry; to develop entry level management professional opportunities for growth and development; and to become familiar with the management practices, culture, expectations and workforce in hospitality operations. Establishment and Completion of coursework for HRTM 476 includes the following:
An internship is a chance to experience in a work setting what you have been studying. It’s an opportunity for you to gain experiential learning to ensure a right fit for your career.
- Interns will develop specific learning objectives and work directly with a UNL faculty member who evaluates your internship and guides you during the completion of your internships.
- Previous work experience will not be accepted to use for internships.
- Internships can be completed locally, nationally or internationally.
HRTM students complete three internships totaling 700 hours over the course of their program to include:
- fieldwork experience,
- a supervisory internship, and
- a management internship.
*To enroll in an internship you must obtain prior approval of your internship and then will receive an enrollment permission code.

- Completion of Practicum Agreement - five (5) position responsibilities (learning objectives);
- Supervised employment experience as an entry level manager (400 hours) within the operations segment of the Hospitality Industry. Hours must be completed during the semester enrolled;
- Two (2) employment updates throughout the term;
- Mid-term internship evaluation;
- Final reflective paper focused on learning objectives; guest expectations; management practices; hospitality industry; culture; expectations; workforce; professional growth and development achieved; future growth and development needs to be accomplished ; trends in hospitality and tourism; sustainability and green practices in hospitality and tourism and career path to achieve first professional management position;
- Submission of hours worked; and,
- Final internship evaluation.
