International seed grant sprouts research and cultural exchange

Educational Psychology professor Ken Kiewra and doctoral students Linlin Luo and Abe Flanigan shared their research internationally this summer thanks to a CEHS international seed grant and additional financial support from the Department of Educational Psychology. Traveling to Freiburg, Germany, the trio made six research presentations at the University of Freiburg, participated in classes and planned research with world-renowned educational psychologist Alexander Renkl and two of his doctoral students.

Boys and porn: Researchers find age of first exposure linked to sexist attitudes

The age when boys first see pornography may help explain why some young men become playboys and others seek power over women, according to new psychological research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Nebraska study, based upon a survey of 330 undergraduate men ages 17 to 54, was a first look at whether the age at which boys first viewed pornography shaped their attitudes about masculinity and sexuality.

Bullying Think Tank hosted by Bullying Research Network

The Bullying Research Network (BRNET) is hosting its seventh annual Think Tank July 27 and 28 in Seattle, Washington. Sue Swearer, Willa Cather Professor of Educational Psychology in the College of Education and Human Sciences, is co-director of BRNET and helped found the international organization.

Maas named CEHS Staff Star Award recipient

Michelle Maas, research project assistant in the Department of Educational Psychology, has been named a CEHS Staff Star Award recipient. CEHS Staff Council President Nancy McConkey made the announcement and presentation in February.

Inaugural Buffett Scholars end year with symposium

The inaugural class of the Buffett Institute Graduate Scholars program presented its research at a symposium last week in Omaha. The 2016-17 Buffett Scholars, University of Nebraska doctoral students Jon Cavanaugh (University of Nebraska-Omaha), Abbey Gregg (University of Nebraska Medical Center), and Amanda Moen (University of Nebraska–Lincoln), along with their faculty mentors, shared their findings and described the implications for the early childhood field.

International Seed Grant proposals due March 6

Through a generous donor grant, CEHS has funds available to enhance instruction and research through attention to international work and issues. Proposals are being solicited from faculty and staff to support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote our international goals.

Proposals must be emailed to Deb Mullen (dmullen1@unl.edu) in a Word document by March 6, 2017.

Internship consortium re-accredited

The Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology (NICPP) has received full re-accreditation (seven years) from the American Psychological Association (APA). The NICPP is one of the largest internship consortia in the United States accredited by APA. Annually, NICPP trains 34 pre-doctoral interns in clinical, counseling, and school psychology from across the United States. There are six agencies across southeastern Nebraska who comprise the NICPP.

Students gain skills in early childhood autism spectrum disorders

Micheale Marcus puts her hands in the air. Then on her nose. Then on the table—a miniature one, where she sits with her client: a 3-year-old toddler who mimics her every move.

Marcus, a second-year graduate student, is receiving training in early childhood autism spectrum disorders through a new traineeship offered in the College of Education and Human Sciences’ school psychology graduate program.

Swearer presents on bullying at State Ed Conference

Professor Susan Swearer, Educational Psychology, will be presenting with Lincoln attorney Corey Stull at the 98th annual Nebraska State Education Conference in a special pre-conference session Nov. 16 in La Vista, Nebraska. Swearer, a nationally recognized researcher and speaker on school bullying, will discuss the psychological impacts of school bullying and Stull, from the Perry Law firm in Lincoln, will cover legal aspects for school leaders.
