Buros/ETS lecture series Sept. 1

The Buros Center for Testing in collaboration with Educational Testing Service is hosting the ninth installment of the annual Buros/ETS lecture series on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in Teachers College Hall, room 112, followed immediately by a reception in the Buros library.

A new study that followed more than 150,000 teen drivers over eight years has found that driver's education significantly reduces crashes and traffic violations among new drivers.

Study shows devoted parents are key to developing world-class talent

It takes 10,000 hours of dedicated practice for a person can become a world-class talent in a given field, or so said writer Malcolm Gladwell in a 2008 book.

It also helps to have intensely dedicated parents, according to a new study by University of Nebraska-Lincoln educational psychologist Kenneth Kiewra and three former graduate students.

April 10: Linking Education and Neuroscience

A growing number of educators, neuroscientists, policy makers and even the general public are excited about the possibility of using findings from neuroscience to improve educational outcomes. Fundamental research is examining questions like, "How do brain systems support learning?" and, "How are brains modified by educational experiences?," but it still remains unclear whether brain scans can impact lesson plans.

Counseling and School Psychology Clinic offers free counseling

The UNL Counseling and School Psychology Clinic has immediate openings for children, adolescents and families seeking therapy for issues related to depression, anxiety, ADHD, school problems and/or social problems.

The clinic, located in Teachers College Hall 49, is part of the educational psychology program in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Susan Swearer receives Willa Cather/Charles Bessey professorship

Susan Swearer, professor of educational psychology, joined UNL in 1997 and is one of the preeminent leaders in the field of bullying prevention. Her research and contributions have positively impacted the lives of fellow researchers, colleagues, clinicians and children around the world. Swearer has been honored with fellow status by the American Psychological Association, has been elected to the Society for the Study of School Psychology, and is a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Swearer presents Nebraska Lecture Nov. 7

Susan Swearer, professor Educational Psychology, will present a talk entitled, " Creating a Kinder World: Empowering Youth to End Bullying," Nov. 7, 3:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium. The lecture is free to the public and will be followed by a reception.

The lecture will be live webcast at research.unl.edu/nebraskalectures.

This Nebraska Lecture is sponsored  by the UNL Research Council, Office of the Chancellor, and the Office of Research and Economic Development in cooperation with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Geisinger running for president of American Psychology Association

Kurt Geisinger, Director of the Buros Center for Testing and Meierhenry Distinguished University Professor at the University of Nebraska, has announced his candidacy for president of the American Psychological Association. As Director of the Buros Center, Geisinger led efforts to produce volumes such as the Mental Measurement Yearbooks as well as a variety of consulting projects, all aimed at effectively combining science and practice of psychology.
