The University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) prioritize the protection of patient and student confidentiality. Under no circumstances shall patient or student confidentiality be compromised.
Throughout their involvement with the UNL ATP, individuals will have access to information pertaining to patient records, conversations, or other communications regarding patients under the care of any UNL ATP affiliate. Such information is deemed confidential and may not be disclosed for personal purposes or beyond one's scope of duty.
All athletic training students (ATS) enrolled in the UNL ATP must adhere to the Healthcare Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), available online at: go.unl.edu/ad58.
Patient records at certain clinical education/observation settings affiliated with the UNL ATP may fall under the protection of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), available online at: https://go.unl.edu/yzom, as educational records.

UNL provides a FERPA notification, available online at: ferpa.unl.edu/ferpa-basics/annual-notification/ outlining student rights under FERPA.
All ATS associated with the UNL ATP must annually complete a HIPAA and FERPA Confidentiality Statement (Appendix C) and undergo HIPAA and FERPA training during their first semester of enrollment prior to participating in their initial clinical education assignment with the UNL ATP.
Violation of HIPAA and/or FERPA regulations will result in immediate dismissal from UNL ATP.
