CH 2: Section 1 - Admission Process and Selection Criteria

Admission to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) is competitive. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

The admissions process has two parts:

  1. Submit an application through the Athletic Training Centralized Application Service (ATCAS).
  2. Complete a separate application through the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Graduate Studies office.

The application cycle opens August 1 and closes April 1 each year. Applications submitted through ATCAS are reviewed by the UNL ATP Admissions Committee in the order they are received, using a comprehensive evaluation process.

To be considered, candidates must meet the UNL ATP and UNL Graduate Studies office admission requirements.

Qualified applicants are evaluated on:

  • Academic work and experiences
  • Completion of required prerequisite coursework
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement outlining career goals and commitment to athletic training

Applicants who meet the minimum criteria will be invited to a virtual interview (e.g., Zoom) with the Admissions Committee. The interview is an important part of the evaluation process. Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements are not eligible for an interview.

All recruitment and admission decisions are guided by the program’s core principles and the university’s non-discrimination policy. Admission decisions are based solely on qualifications, performance, and conduct, in accordance with university policies, rules, and applicable laws.

Prospective students who have already completed, or are in the final year of, their undergraduate degree are encouraged to begin the application process on ATCAS as early as possible. Please note: Admission to UNL does not guarantee admission to the UNL Athletic Training Program.

While this handbook provides an overview of program and course prerequisites, the official requirements are listed in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Academic Catalog (online at: go.unl.edu/v3sq) .

The College of Education and Human Sciences reserves the right to update program requirements. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor each semester to review progress toward graduation.
