CH 2: Section 2 - Admission Requirements

To obtain admission to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) the following criteria must be completed:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
    • Must be completed before the program starts.
  2. Undergraduate overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
    • Students with an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) between 2.6 and 2.99 may apply for admission and, if accepted, will be granted conditional graduate status. Students admitted with “Conditional Graduate Admission” must satisfy all conditions of admission by the deadline established by the UNL Office of Graduate Studies or the UNL Athletic Training Program. Failure to meet all admission conditions by the deadline will result in admission revocation. “Conditional Graduate Admission” is changed to “Full Graduate Admission” when all conditions of the admission have been met as determined by the UNL Office of Graduate Studies or UNL ATP. 
  3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Required of all applicants for whom English is not their native language.
    • Taken within two years of application to the program.
    • Official scores from the Educational Talent (ETS) for the TOEFL must be received for your application to be reviewed.
    • A score of at least 550 (pBT) or 79 (iBT) is required.
    • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln institutional code is 6877.
  4. Completion of the prerequisite course work with a grade of C- or higher
    • All prerequisite coursework must be completed before the program starts.

    • All prerequisite coursework must have been completed within 10 years of application submission.  
  5. Official Transcripts from all academic course work completed at an accredited college/university.
  6. Observation hours
    • A minimum of 60-hours of clinical observation under the direct supervision of a Board of Certification (BOC)-credentialed athletic trainer in good standing with the BOC at the time of observation.
    • Observation hours must have been obtained within two years prior to application submission.
    • Observation hours must be completed using the Athletic Training Observation Hours form located on the UNL ATCAS application and on the UNL ATP webpage, online at: go.unl.edu/fst8.
  7. Three letters of Recommendation that can speak to the applicant’s potential success as a graduate student and as a professional healthcare provider.
    • One recommendation letter must be provided from a BOC-credentialed Athletic Trainer who provided at least 30 of the required 60 hours of direct supervision. 
    • One recommendation letter must be from a faculty member who can speak to the applicant’s ability to be successful in graduate school.
    • One recommendation letter must be from an additional faculty member or a supervisor of the applicant. 
  8. Personal Statement describing professional goals including why you have chosen athletic training as a career and why you have chosen to apply to the UNL ATP. 
  9. Current CV/Resume
  10. General Health Physical Examination
  11. Verification of the following immunizations:
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
    • PPD Test (Tuberculosis Skin Test)
    • Hepatitis B Vaccine or approved waiver (Accessible on the UNL ATCAS Application)
  12. UNL ATP Technical Standards for Admission form accessible in Appendix A and on the UNL ATCAS application.
  13. All students who are accepted into the UNL ATP will be required to submit and maintain a current background check through the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences while enrolled in the UNL ATP. Information for completing and maintaining a current background check can be found online at: go.unl.edu/is5f. All background checks must be completed and on file in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences prior to May 31st. The background check will cover three years from the date indicated on the student's report. A second background check will need to be completed if a student’s degree program takes longer than three years.
