Athletic training students (ATS) may be assigned to clinical education activities involving teams that travel to away venues. Participation in team travel as part of the UNL Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) clinical education is not mandatory. If an ATS is requested by their clinical preceptor to travel with a team, it is considered a privilege. Should an ATS decline the opportunity, there will be no negative consequences, including grade reductions nor retaliatory actions.
If an ATS accepts a travel opportunity, it is the responsibility of the assigned preceptor to ensure the ATS receives travel accommodations equivalent to those of the preceptor. All travel arrangements will comply with the University of Nebraska's travel policies which can be found online at: go.unl.edu/hc3k.
Efforts will be made to minimize class absences due to travel assignments. Students are responsible for notifying their instructors of upcoming travel, submitting assignments prior to departure, and acquiring any information or materials missed during their absence.
While traveling, ATS are expected to adhere to all ethical codes of conduct as outlined by the UNL ATP and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). When traveling with a University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) athletic team, ATS must also comply with the following:
- Dress according to or above the team’s dress code.
- Abide by all team rules, including curfews.
- Obtain clearance from the head coach or supervising preceptor before leaving the team for any reason.
- Abstain from the consumption of alcohol which is strictly prohibited while representing UNL as an ATS.
