CH 3: Section 18 - Mobile Device and Telephone Communication Policy

Contacting University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) faculty or preceptors via phone or text should be limited to professional matters. Non-professional communication is only permitted with prior approval or in emergency situations occurring outside normal business hours.

Students are prohibited from contacting patients via personal mobile devices. Any necessary communication with patients via telephone must be conducted using preceptor-approved devices, not personal equipment such as mobile phones or iPads.

Use of Clinical Site Telephones

  • Telephones at clinical education sites are not to be used for personal calls.
  • Long-distance or toll calls must not be made without prior approval.
  • Personal calls or messages should not be forwarded to clinical education site telephones or electronic devices.

Clinical Site Telephone Answering Policy

  • When answering the telephone at a clinical education or observation site, please adhere to the following protocol: 
    “Hello, [name of clinical site], this is [name of student]. How may I assist you?” 
  • It is essential to document all messages, including the time and date of each call. 
  • All telephone messages should be delivered promptly to the appropriate individual.
