Qualifying for the Application and Interview Process

While enrolled in ATHT 145, the preprofessional student will be required to complete a total of twenty (20) hours of athletic training clinical observation at two (2) University of Nebraska-Lincoln Athletic Training Program (UNL ATP) Clinical Education Rotation sites. If a preprofessional student fails to obtain a minimum of twenty (20) hours of clinical observation, their ATHT 145 course grade will be reduced by one letter grade, and acceptance into the UNL ATP may be affected. Preprofessional clinical observation hours will be documented by the preprofessional student on the Clinical Observation Hour Log (Appendix B).

To successfully complete ATHT 145 and advance to ATHT 146-First Aid, Treatment, and Management of Athletic Injuries, the preprofessional student must earn a grade of a B- or higher, obtain at least 20 hours of clinical observation under the assigned UNL ATP Preceptor, and successfully complete UNL Bloodborne Pathogens Training. Failure to obtain the minimum requirements for ATHT 145 will prevent the preprofessional student from advancing to ATHT 146.

After successful completion of ATHT 145 the preprofessional student will enroll in ATHT 146-First Aid, Treatment, and Management of Athletic Injuries during the Spring Semester. While enrolled in ATHT 146, preprofessional students will continue clinical education observations with the following changes:

  1. Complete a minimum of forty (40) total hours of clinical observation at two (2) UNL ATP Clinical Education Rotations.
  2. All Preprofessional Students will be under the direct supervision of a UNL ATP Preceptor and will be assigned to a professional student that will serve as a mentor to the preprofessional student during his/her clinical observation at the mentor’s clinical site. If a preprofessional student fails to obtain a minimum of forty (40) hours of clinical observation their ATHT 146 course, grade will be reduced by one letter grade and acceptance into the UNL ATP may be affected. Preprofessional clinical observation hours will be documented by the preprofessional student on the Clinical Observation Hour Log (Appendix B).

All students applying to the UNL ATP must provide written documentation of at least 60 hours of direct athletic training clinical observation that occurred after high school. Athletic Training observation must be must be accumulated under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer that was in good standing with the Board of Certification (BOC) during the observation period. Students who do not meet the minimum 60 hours of post high school observation or acquire Athletic Training observation hours under the direct supervision of an Athletic Trainer who is not in good standing with the BOC at the time of observation, may not be eligible to apply to the UNL ATP.

At the conclusion of ATHT 146, preprofessional students will be asked to complete an evaluation of their experience as a preprofessional student in the UNL ATP (Appendix C). This evaluation will be included in the UNL ATP Comprehensive Assessment Plan. This evaluation is voluntary and is not required as part of ATHT 146 nor the UNL ATP Application.

The preprofessional student must meet all of the following requirements listed below prior to making official application for admission to the UNL ATP. Applications that do not meet all of the requirements listed below will be considered incomplete and will not qualify for an interview:

  1. Completion of ATHT 145-Introduction to Athletic Training with a grade of B- or higher.
  2. Completion of ATHT 146-First Aid, Treatment, and Management of Athletic Injuries with a grade of B- or higher.
  3. Completion of Preprofessional Clinical Education Observation Requirements.
    1. Documentation of at least 60 total hours of clinical education observation under the direct supervision of a UNL ATP Preceptor, and/or an athletic trainer in good standing with the BOC at the time of observation.
      • Only clinical education observation hours accrued following secondary education (high school) will be counted towards the 60 total hours of clinical education observation.
      • Hours collected during secondary education are not eligible to be submitted for the application process.
  4. A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
  5. Completion of UNL ATP Bloodborne Pathogen Training.
  6. BOC- and UNL ATP-approved emergency cardiac care certification.
