Students Represent CYAF Extension at Apple Jack Festival

Three students enrolled in the Independent Study in Extension course helped present during the annual Apple Jack Festival in Nebraska City. They helped with two programs: Makey Makey and Commodity Carnival. Makey Makey teaches children science and technology skills through interactive activities. Commodity Carnival, which features the always popular "Risk Ranch" Plinko board, teaches children about agricultural concepts and food literacty through interactive games.

Dawn Davis Selected as Emerging Leader

Dawn Davis has been selected to participate in the Emerging Leader Program from New Leaders. She will travel to Washington, D.C., this December for two days of networking and professional development.

Dawn is the Project Director for the Language and Reading Research Consortium project at the Link N Literacy Lab.

Meisels joins NET panel on science of brain development

Sam Meisels, executive director of the University of Nebraska’s Buffett Early Childhood Institute, is one of four early childhood experts scheduled to appear at 8 p.m. Jan. 16 on NET2 World Television’s broadcast of “The Science of Brain Development in Early Childhood.” The panelists will discuss how to ensure that very young children get the experiences they need to grow up capable, confident and ready for success. Meisels is part of the faculty of the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies in the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Durden wins national Extension specialist award

Impact. It’s what Tonia Durden strives for in her role at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As an assistant professor in Child, Youth and Family Studies and an early childhood Extension specialist, Durden is working to help communities support the healthy growth, development and success of young children. Her work is getting noticed. At a national webinar hosted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture on Thursday, Dec. 5, Durden was formally honored with the 2013 Early Achievement Award.

Dalla to Found First Quarterly Journal on Human Trafficking

It's everywhere – provided you know where to find it.

Years of research have taught CYFS faculty affiliate Rochelle Dalla, department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies, that the lesson applies both to the shadowy practice of human trafficking and the scattered information surrounding it.

Dalla will aim to assemble research and foster discourse on the issue by founding the recently approved Journal of Human Trafficking, which she cited as the first of its kind.

Meisels to speak Nov. 11: "Tested Before Their Time? Accountability and Early Learning"

The Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies presents Samuel Meisels, Executive Director, Buffett Early Childhood Institute. Meisels will present his talk as part of the Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education.

Meisels will speak Nov. 11, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m at the East Campus Union (rooms to be posted). The talk will be followed by breakout sessions 3:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.

CEHS co-sponsors symposium on man-made environments and the natural world

Gina Peek, assistant professor at Oklahoma State University, is the featured speaker at Families, the Built Environment, and the Natural World, Nov. 7., a  symposium exploring how man-made environments and the natural world impact the health of children, youth, and families.

Following the lecture by Peek, all attendees will have the opportunity to discuss current trends facing today's youth and families. Below are the topics that will be discussed. You will be asked to pick one area in your registration; however, you are free to choose a different topic that day.

Mortensen, Family & Consumer Sciences Education major, featured in AAFCS online interview

New member McKenzie Mortensen is a rising star in the Nebraska Affiliate. She grew up in Lincoln, went to Lincoln East High School, and now attends University of Nebraska Lincoln where she majors in Secondary Education in Family and Consumer Sciences. Writes McKenzie, "I have wanted to be a teacher since the 3rd grade and finally chose to major in Family and Consumer Sciences Education so I could use my ability to relate with others, keep a positive attitude and show my compassion for helping students to work and cope with any type of problem they are experiencing.
