Nebraskans voice support for early childhood programs, investments

A new study reveals that the vast majority of Nebraskans value and support early care and education and believe more needs to be done to prepare young children for success in school and life. In overwhelming numbers, residents say that high-quality early care and education is not available or affordable for all families in Nebraska.

Online graduate education program ranked 14th nationally

The College of Education and Human Science’s online graduate education program has been ranked 14^th nationally by U.S. News and World Report. CEHS was ranked fourth among Big Ten peers and is the second highest ranked program west of the Mississippi.

The Educational Administration department sent three student affairs master’s cohort students to the NASPA Region IV-W Conference in Beaver Creek, CO November 8-12 to compete in a case study. NASPA is a professional organization for student affairs administrators and students interested in student affairs.

CEHS Student Research and Creative Activity Fair Nov. 14

CEHS undergraduate and graduate students will share their work with fellow students, faculty and other educators and community members Saturday, Nov. 14 at Teachers College Hall and the Henzlik Hub. Other UNL students and recent alums who have engaged in the study of education and/or human sciences have also been invited to share.

The aim of the conference is to give students an opportunity to showcase their work and dialogue with peers and mentors about important issues in education and the human sciences.

Niehaus earns grants to study student engagement

Elizabeth Niehaus, assistant professor in Educational Administration, has been awarded two grants to study Caribbean student engagement in higher education. The American College Personnel Association Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant and the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators In Higher Education) Foundation awarded $4,650--both projects are housed in the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools.

Major CEHS initiative invests in early childhood

Responding to changing demographics and a growing population of young at-risk children, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln today announced a strategic initiative to strengthen support for early childhood development in Nebraska.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences Marjorie Kostelnik, Lt. Gov. Mike Foley and others shared the plans at the Van Brunt Visitors Center.

Student Affairs alum gets mention in Chronicle

Quint Geis, a May 2015 Student Affairs master's graduate, was mentioned in an article in the Aug. 24 Chronicle of Higher Education. The article described the experiences of homeless college students. Geis did research on the topic for his master's thesis. In the article, he is quoted as saying homeless college students just want to be "normal, regular students." The article also notes that Geis' findings showed that these students felt disconnected from peers and got little support from their schools.

Hatch joins new UT faculty affiliate program

Deryl Hatch, an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Administration (EDAD) in the College of Education and Human Sciences, has been invited to join a new faculty affiliate program at the University of Texas at Austin that is designed to connect P–16 practitioners and administrators with relevant research on Latino males’ educational experiences. Latino males have the lowest high school graduation, college enrollment and college completion rates of any subgroup.
