Educational Administration Student Affairs master's cohort stands out at conference

The Educational Administration Student Affairs graduate program cohort made their presence known at the NASPA Regional IV-W Conference in Hot Springs, AR in November. NASPA is a professional organization for student affairs administrators and students seeking to enter the profession. All 38 students were in attendance led by Director and Assistant Professor of Practice Corey Rumann and Assistant Professor of Practice Stephanie Bondi. Amy Holland and Luke Bretscher, both second-year students, introduced two of the keynote speakers.

Isernhagen, Florendo receive National Rural Education research award

Jody Isernhagen, associate professor in Educational Administration, and Jackie Florendo, a 2012 Ed.D. graduate in Educational Administration, were recently recognized by the National Rural Education Association as recipients of the Howard A. Dawson Best Research Paper Award. The paper, “Administrators Perceptions of Early Childhood Education,” was based on the findings from Florendo’s dissertation. She graduated in December 2012 and is currently the coordinator for Alliance for Kids, an initiative of the Early Childhood Council for El Paso County serving Colorado Springs, CO.

Prospective college students and social media a mixed bag

The share of prospective students who used social-media Web sites to learn about colleges they were considering has more than doubled in the last four years, according to the results of a survey released on Wednesday. Even so, a majority of the students surveyed said they had not used such sites in their college search.

Heineman proclaims Rural Education Week

With support from the Center for Great Plains Studies and UNL's National Center for Research on Rural Education (R²Ed), Gov. Dave Heineman has proclaimed April 1-6 as Rural Education Week in the state.

Center for Great Plains Director Richard Edwards and R²Ed Director Susan Sheridan joined Peter Longo, professor of political science at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, in requesting the proclamation.

Its signing sets the stage for two events that will address education in rural communities throughout the Cornhusker State and beyond.

Golf tournament defrays costs for underrepresented students

On Friday July 8, CEHS will host a golf tournament at the Tiburon Golf Course near Gretna to raise dollars for scholarships for underrepresented students in CEHS programs. Last year more than 150 people came together for the event, organized by Don Benning, with help from Cindy DeRyke.

This year again, it will be a wonderful day for great cause. If you would like further information, contact Cindy in the Educational Administration Department Office. Tom Osborne will be the featured host this year.
