Passion for teaching and keeping students actively engaged in the learning process is John Maag’s trademark as a professor of speech language pathology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Education and Human Sciences. For his talents as a teacher, Maag has been selected for the Donald R. and Mary Lee Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence.

Jones receives Career Award in Hearing and Balance from the American Academy of Audiology

Tim Jones, professor in Speech Education and Communication Disorders, has been selected to receive the Career Award in Hearing and Balance from the American Academy of Audiology.

This award is given to non-audiologists with a distinguished career in fields within or related to hearing or balance. Awardees have made significant contributions to their field of study and have devoted their professional career to clinical or laboratory research, teaching, clinical service, and/or mentoring other professionals in the fields related to hearing and balance.

Ray receives Service to Mankind award from Gateway Sertoma Club

Stacie Ray, assistant professor of practice in Special Education and Communication Disorders, received the Service to Mankind award from the Gateway Sertoma Club for her work at the local and state levels with HearU Nebraska and the Sertoma Hearing Aid Bank housed at the Barkley Memorial Center. Ray was also recognized for her work with Montclair State University to develop their hearing aid bank based on the model at UNL.

Holt to present talk Nov. 22, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders is pleased to host Chris Holt from the University of Rochester Medical Center. Holt earned his PhD in pharmacology and toxicology from Tulane University School of Medicine. He studies synaptic pharmacology of the vestibular apparatus. Many sensory systems are endowed with efferent feedback mechanisms that can modulate their primary input to the brain.

Duppong Hurley leads team that earns $3.2M grant to study program aimed at keeping kids in school

Kids with emotional and behavioral disorders are more likely to miss school, fail classes and drop out than any other group of students with disabilities. With support from a $3.2 million grant, UNL researchers are evaluating a unique new program that uses parent-to-parent support to encourage families to get the help they need to keep kids in school.

Duppong Hurly and Epstein generate $3.2 million IES grant

Kristin Duppong Hurley and Michael Epstein, professors in the College of Education and Human Science’s Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, have been awarded a $3.2 million research grant from the Institute of Educational Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. They will study Parent Connectors, an innovative parent-to-parent intervention program developed to support the families of middle school youth with emotional disturbance (ED).

Huskers for Hearing Fun Run raises $3500

The Student Academy of Audiology in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders sponsored the Huskers for Hearing 5K Fun Run in April. Proceeds benefited HearU Nebraska, a group that provides amplification devices to hearing impaired infants and toddlers from low income families and the SAA.

The Fun Run attracted more than 150 runners and raised more than $3500.

Thank you to all who participated and to those who took their time to make this event such a success.

Magician, Spencer, to talk about his work with disabled children

Kevin Spencer will be in Lincoln performing a show at the Lied Center April 19th, but his real passion is working with children with disabilities and teaching them magic tricks. 

Kevin will be at the Barkley Memorial Center on Wednesday, April 17, Barkley Room 130, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. talking about how he works with children with disabilities.

All are invited to join us.

Klare to offer lecture April 8

Matthew Klare, National Dropout Prevention Center for Students with Disabilities, will provide an overview of the status of dropout prevention, intervention and recovery, particularly for students with disabilities. He will describe a dropout prevention risk calculator currently being refined in cooperation with Goodrich Middle School in Lincoln and explain how it can be used to intervene for high risk students. He will also address strategies to prevent dropouts and recover students who have dropped out.
