Hebert featured in "Inside IES Research" blog

Assistant Professor Michael Hebert, Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, is featured in the August 31, 2015 blog "Inside IES Research," hosted by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. Hebert was previously selected as a recipient of an Early Career Development and Mentoring Grant from the National Center for Special Education Rsearch (NCSER), a division of IES.

SECD hosts school discipline conference Sept. 18

The apparent overuse of suspension and expulsion as disciplinary consequences in schools has become a serious concern. Both the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Office of Civil Rights have communicated to educators in the last year concerns about what they believe is a consistent pattern of over representation of students who are minorities, and students receiving these consequences. The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders is hosting a one-day conference from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sept.

Honaker Wins Award

Julie Honaker’s  article in the American Journal of Audiology, “Impact of Fear of Falling for Patients and Caregivers: Perceptions Before and After Participation in Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Therapy,” is the winner of the 2014 Editor’s Award.  An Editor’s Award is  limited to the most impactful works that meet the highest quality standards in research design and presentation.

Barlow Earns Award

Congratulations to Steven Barlow who will be awarded American Speech Language Hearing Association Honors at the November convention.  This is the highest award given by ASHA for significant contributions to the field.

Sources of Pride

Kelly Wacker will receive the Service to Mankind Award from the University Sertoma Club.  Kelly is being recognized for her work with Special Olympics.

Following a successful Spark Talk this spring, Reece Peterson is leading preparations for a fall conference on Exclusionary School Discipline to be held September 18, 2015 at the Nebraska Innovation Campus.  Save the date!  More information to soon follow.

Honaker and Weissbeck honored

Congratulations to Julie Honaker who recently recieved a Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Cinncinati.

Congratulations to Diana Weissbeck, AUD student, who recieved a research award for her poster  presentation at the UNL Research Fair earlier this month.  Diana's mentor is Julie Honaker.

Governor Appoints Stacie Ray

Governor Pete Ricketts recently appointed Stacie Ray, Associate Professor of Practice in SECD, to the Board of Commissioners for the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH).  The mission of NCDHH is  to promote and advocate for Nebraskans who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind or Hard of Hearing: to achieve equality and opportunity in social, educational, vocational, and legal aspects impacting their daily lives; and to enhance and monitor access to effective communication and telecommunication technology.
