First brown bag session of fall semester set for Sept. 23

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders announced five fall semester dates for brown bag sessions at the Barkley Memorial Center. The brown bags are intended primarily to allow graduate students to present and respond to research topics, while receiving feedback from the people in attendance.

Student Council for Exceptional Children to host sand volleyball tournament Oct. 2

The Student Council for Exceptional Children at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host Serve for SCEC, a sand volleyball tournament, at Pioneers Park Sunday, Oct. 2, to raise money for various club activities.

Pool play for the six-on-six coed tournament begins at 11 a.m. at the sand volleyball courts in Pioneers Park, with seeding for the single-elimination tournament determined by pool play.

SECD welcomes three new SPED faculty members

Three new assistant professors joined the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders for the 2016-17 academic year. Marc Goodrich, Jessica Namkung and Peng Peng are the newest faces among the special education faculty.

Kit & Dick Schmoker Reading Center relocated to Barkley Memorial Center

The Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will begin its 2016 fall session in a new home at the Barkley Memorial Center.

SECD welcomes two new SLP faculty members

Two new lecturers joined the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders for the 2016-17 academic year. Nikki Scott and Abby Simpson are the newest faces among the speech-language pathology faculty, and will both serve as clinical supervisors in the Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic as well.

Toni Morehouse retiring from SECD Aug. 31

Toni Morehouse, a lecturer in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, is retiring after nearly 30 years at the university. Her final day will be Aug. 31.

System could help diagnose, treat brain injuries

Steven Barlow has developed a novel system that measures muscle forces in the face, mouth and fingers to help evaluate the health of the staggeringly complex but fragile organ that controls them. With a prototype soon to be piloted at Lincoln’s Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, the system could inform the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system conditions ranging from stroke and traumatic brain injury to Parkinson’s disease and autism.
