Eleven CEHS Students Earn Academic All-Big Ten Honors

Eleven CEHS students out of 51 Nebraska student-athletes have been awarded Academic All-Big Ten Honors. Students must be in their second academic year, be a letterwinner, and maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average to be eligible for the Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Maag and Barlow Honored

John Maag was honored during his class today by the Mortar Board Society (Black Masques) for his leadership in teaching, research, and service. Congratulations John!

Steven Barlow was elected to membership in the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR). The goal of SPR is to create a network of multidisciplinary researchers to improve child health. Steven will be honored at their meeting in the spring. Congratulations Steven!

CEHS Student Research and Creative Activity Fair Nov. 14

CEHS undergraduate and graduate students will share their work with fellow students, faculty and other educators and community members Saturday, Nov. 14 at Teachers College Hall and the Henzlik Hub. Other UNL students and recent alums who have engaged in the study of education and/or human sciences have also been invited to share.

The aim of the conference is to give students an opportunity to showcase their work and dialogue with peers and mentors about important issues in education and the human sciences.

SECD faculty & staff recognized

Faculty and staff from the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders have recently been recognized for a variety of professional successes.

Steven Barlow, Corwin Moore Professor, was appointed as associate director of the center for Brain, Biology and Behavior. He will lead interdisciplinary research efforts in neurotherapeutics. He will also receive American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Honors at its November convention—the highest award given by ASHA for significant contributions to the field.

Major CEHS initiative invests in early childhood

Responding to changing demographics and a growing population of young at-risk children, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln today announced a strategic initiative to strengthen support for early childhood development in Nebraska.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences Marjorie Kostelnik, Lt. Gov. Mike Foley and others shared the plans at the Van Brunt Visitors Center.

Hebert featured in "Inside IES Research" blog

Assistant Professor Michael Hebert, Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, is featured in the August 31, 2015 blog "Inside IES Research," hosted by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. Hebert was previously selected as a recipient of an Early Career Development and Mentoring Grant from the National Center for Special Education Rsearch (NCSER), a division of IES.

SECD hosts school discipline conference Sept. 18

The apparent overuse of suspension and expulsion as disciplinary consequences in schools has become a serious concern. Both the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Office of Civil Rights have communicated to educators in the last year concerns about what they believe is a consistent pattern of over representation of students who are minorities, and students receiving these consequences. The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders is hosting a one-day conference from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sept.

Julie Honaker’s article in the American Journal of Audiology, “Impact of Fear of Falling for Patients and Caregivers: Perceptions Before and After Participation in Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Therapy,” is the winner of the 2014 Editor’s Award.
