Savaiano Collaborates on Art Project

Students in associate professor of art Sandra Williams’ Color and Composition class this fall completed a project to recreate works of art in a tactual manner to be displayed at the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

SECD doctoral students awarded New Century Scholarships

Austin Oder and Jessie Patterson, both Ph.D. students in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, were awarded New Century Doctoral Scholarships from the American Speech Language Hearing Association. The New Century Scholarship program supports strong doctoral candidates who will pursue a teacher-investigator career in the academic environment at the university/college level. Oder and Patterson will be recognized at the American Speech Language Hearing Association convention in November.

Congratulations to Steve Boney who was awarded Honors of the Association from the Nebraska Speech Language Hearing Association.  Steve was recognized for his many years of service to the profession, the state organization, the state board of examiners, the department, students, and to individuals with hearing loss.

Dr. Ray Awarded Funds for Children's Hearing Aids

Stacie Ray was awarded $75,950 from Women Investing in Nebraska for her proposal to give the gift of hearing through HearU Nebraska.  Stacie’s proposal was selected after site visits were completed for nine finalists.  The funds will be used to secure amplification devices for 30+ hearing impaired children (birth to age 18) in the state of Nebraska.  HearU Nebraska’s mission is to provide hearing aids to children ages 0 to 18 with priority to newly identified children from 0 to 3 years of age.

Lineweber 2014 Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award recipient

Roberta Lineweber, a special education teacher with Beatrice Public Schools, has been selected as the 2014 Freda Battey Distinguished Educator Award recipient. She will receive the award May 16 at an awards luncheon on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. Lineweber was nominated by Kelly Maydwell of Beatrice, a student in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln majoring in pre-special education.

Charles Healey, professor of peech language pathology in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, is retiring following a 37-year career at UNL. A retirement reception will be held from 3-5 p.m., Monday, May 5 at the Barkley Memorial Center, Room 130.

Beukelman retirement reception May 5

The annual Huskers for Hearing 5K Fun Run will be held on East Campus Apr. 26 at 9:00 a.m. Registration opens Apr. 11 at http://marketplace.unl.edu/sofs/student-academy-of-audiology. Cost is $30 for ages 10 and up; free for 9 and younger. Admission includes a t-shirt.

The event is organized by the UNL chapter of the Student Academy of Audiology and benefits HearU Nebraska and the UNL chapter of the Student Academy of Audiology.
