Presenting the 2016 CEHS Awards

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will present its annual CEHS awards at 10 a.m., April 22 at the Sheldon Museum of Art, with a reception following. All CEHS faculty, staff, friends and family are invited to attend. The College of Education and Human Sciences is pleased to announce the following award recipients.

TLTE's Lopez receives Swanson Award for teaching excellence

The College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) has selected William Lopez, professor of practice in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, as the 2016 recipient of the Donald R. & Mary Lee Swanson Award for Teaching Excellence. He was recognized at a campus luncheon in his honor April 18 and will also be honored at the CEHS Awards Ceremony April 22 and the UNL Honor’s Convocation Sunday, April 23 at the Lied Center.

Heaton elected chair of AERA SIG

Ruth Heaton, Gilmartin Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been elected to a two-year term as co-chair of the Research in Mathematics Education special interest group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Her term begins following the 2016 AERA Annual Meeting, April 8-12.

Documentary addresses "boy crisis"

"The Mask You Live In," a documentary that follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity, will be screened at 7 p.m., Friday, April 8 in the Henzlik Hall Auditorium, Room 124.

Nebraskans voice support for early childhood programs, investments

A new study reveals that the vast majority of Nebraskans value and support early care and education and believe more needs to be done to prepare young children for success in school and life. In overwhelming numbers, residents say that high-quality early care and education is not available or affordable for all families in Nebraska.

Buffett Early Childhood Institute to announce statewide survey results

More than 7,100 Nebraskans recently responded to the largest public opinion survey ever conducted in the state about the care and education of young children. Findings of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute/Gallup Survey on Early Childhood Care and Education in Nebraska will be shared from 8:30-10 a.m., March 29 at the Sheldon Museum of Art (note this is a location change) on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Opening remarks will be made by Senator Galen Hadley, speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.

DN profiles dual language teaching, quotes Catalano

As the state's demographics continue to change, Nebraska schools are increasingly seeking the services of bilingual teachers. School districts from Omaha to Lexington are adopting dual language programs to address the achievement challenges of more diverse student populations. Zach Hammack of the Daily Nebraskan recently wrote an article highlighting this education issue and consulted Theresa Catalano, assistant professor in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, for his story.

UNL’s Tech EDGE earns national recognition

Tech EDGE, a collaborative partnership between UNL and eight Nebraska PK-12 partner school districts, has been awarded the 2016 Best Practice Award for the Innovative Use of Technology from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. AACTE will present the award to Guy Trainin and Laurie Friedrich from the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, on Feb. 25 at the group’s annual conference in Las Vegas.
