Hamann named Equity Fellow

Ted Hamann, professor in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education (TLTE), has been selected as one of 13 state-specific “Equity Fellows” for the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP EAC). Serving Nebraska, Hamann joins other nationally prominent scholars who have engaged deeply and published widely on one or more of the four desegregation areas—race, sex, national origin, and religion—focused on by MAP EAC.

Viesca earns grant to support teachers of bilingual learners in 11 states

A $2.7 million professional development grant from the U.S. Department of Education will help 2,000 teachers in 11 states better serve their bilingual students. The International Consortium for Multilingual Excellence in Education (ICMEE) project is being funded from the Office of English Language Acquisition and is being led by University of Nebraska–Lincoln assistant professor Kara Viesca from the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.

International Seed Grant proposals due March 6

Through a generous donor grant, CEHS has funds available to enhance instruction and research through attention to international work and issues. Proposals are being solicited from faculty and staff to support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote our international goals.

Proposals must be emailed to Deb Mullen (dmullen1@unl.edu) in a Word document by March 6, 2017.

Moeller elected president-elect of American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

Leading her field on a national scale is nothing new to Ali Moeller, Edith S. Greer Professor of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. In 2017, Moeller is serving as president-elect of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), a professional organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages. Previously she served as president of the American Association of Teachers of German and more recently the National Federation of Modern Language Teaching Association.

CEHS jumps to No. 4 in national online ranking

Online graduate education programs in the College of Education and Human Sciences have been ranked fourth best nationally in an annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report announced Jan. 10. CEHS jumped 10 spots from the 2016 ranking and is the highest Big Ten program ranked in the category of best online graduate education programs.

TLTE’s Gatti earns prestigious Spencer grant

Lauren Gatti closely tracks new developments in teacher preparation. When the U.S. Department of Education announced new regulations for teacher preparation programs earlier this month, she immediately started pouring over them. Gatti’s close attention to teacher education and her unique research in teacher residency programs has resulted in a $50,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation Small Grants Program. Gatti will be working on the grant with colleagues from DePaul University and National-Louis University in Chicago.

Tina Vo, a CEHS doctoral student in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been accepted to the 2016-17 CADRE Fellows program of the Community for Advancing Discovery Research in Education, a program funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Eckerson receives dissertation award

Janet Eckerson, a 2015 Ed.D. graduate from Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been recognized by the Carnegie Project on the Educational Doctorate with an honorable mention award in the Dissertation in Practice Awards.

Sand earns White House Presidential Award for mathematics teaching

Gregory Sand, an Ed.D. student in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Sand is in his 20th year of teaching mathematics, the last 14 at Central High School in Omaha Public Schools. He is advised in his doctoral program in the College of Education and Human Sciences by Stephen Swidler, associate professor.

UNL faculty, staff, students and K-12 colleagues are welcome to attend “Transformative Education in a Globalized Context,” the 4th Annual Fall Professional Development Workshop hosted by the Secondary English Education Program in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education. The free workshop will be held from 8:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8. in Henzlik and Teacher College halls at 14th and Vine streets on UNL’s City Campus.
