Baer, 2012 TLTE Ph.D. grad earns, AERA SIG Award

Recent CEHS Ph.D. graduate Stephanie Baer has been chosen to receive the Arts and Learning Special Interest Group (SIG) Dissertation Award that will be presented at the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in April in Philadelphia. Baer, who earned her Ph.D. from Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education in December 2012, researched the issue of student teacher fear in the arts classroom and how it affects students’ willingness to learn.

TLTE senior, Cortney, receives Mathematics Education Trust Prospective Teacher Award

Camilla Cortney, TLTE senior mathematics education student, was selected to receive one of four Mathematics Education Trust Prospective Teacher NCTM Annual Conference Attendance Awards. This award, totaling $1,200 plus conference registration, will enable her to attend the NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans this April. Camilla's primary focus at the conference will be to attend sessions that will enable her to better serve English language learner students in her mathematics classes.

TLTE's Moeller elected to national board

Ali Moeller, Edith S. Greer professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, has been elected to the board of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). She began her three-year term Jan. 1 as an at-large member along with Juan Carlos Morales of the Delaware Department of Education.

Omaha Westside's Mitchell to receive McAuliffe Award from UNL

Creativity and inspiration in the classroom has earned Omaha Westside Community Schools fifth grade teacher Pam Mitchell the Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education.

The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents the annual award to a teacher who exemplifies the character of Christa McAuliffe, an educator who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster. Mitchell will be recognized at a banquet March 9 in Lincoln.

Leeper Miller selected as Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children's Tylenol National Child Care Teacher A

Jenny Leeper Miller, master teacher and assistant director at the Ruth Staples Child Development Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been selected as a Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s Tylenol National Child Care Teacher Award winner. She is one of 50 teachers selected nationally for the award that acknowledges the critical role of child care teachers in providing quality early care and education.

New masters degree program offers certification to individuals with a science degree

In the next 20 years, jobs in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math are predicted to grow at double-digit rates. Workers in these fields are already in high demand, and the U.S. education system is under the gun to prepare students for these careers. The Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education in the College of Education and Human Sciences has developed a unique master’s degree program that targets non-traditional students who want to teach middle school or high school science.

Harnisch gives keynotes at international conferences in Turkey and Ukraine

In late October, 2013 Del Harnisch, professor in Teaching, Learning, & Teacher Education, was invited by Ataturk University to give the keynote presentation for a seminar series entitled “The New Trends in Teacher Education.” The speech was opened the “Eurasian Silk Road Universities Consortium—Silk Road Science and Education Caravan” in Erzurum, Turkey.In November, 2013, Harnisch was also an invited speaker, giving a keynote speech at the International Education Week Round Table, “Opportunities and Challenges of Education.” Harnisch received a Certificate of Appreciation for his work w

Engin-Wedin recognized by Nebraska Department of Education

CYFS faculty affiliate Nancy Engen-Wedin, department of Teacher Learning and Teacher Education, has received the Friend of American Indian Education Award from the Nebraska Department of Education.

Engen-Wedin, coordinator of the Indigenous Roots Teacher Education Program (ROOTS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was honored at the NDE's Native American Student Achievement Symposium in October.

Miss Representation, a documentary film by Jennifer Siebel Newsom

This documentary, co-sponsored by the department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education, explores how the media's often disparaging portrayals of women contribute to the under-representation of females in positions of power, creating another generation of women defined by beauty and sexuality, and not by their capacity as leaders.

The documentary will be shown Oct. 10, 7:00 p.m. in the Nebraska Union City Campus, room 200. A panel discussion will follow the film screening.
