TLTE graduate receives Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

David Hartman, who received his doctorate in mathematics education through the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, is one of two Nebraska teachers who recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Hartman is currently mathematics department chair at Southwest High School in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Presidential Award is the highest recognition math and science teachers can receive.

Kabourek receives Freda Drath Battey Distinguished Educator Award

CEHS proudly announces that Andrea Kabourek, English teacher at Lincoln East High School, is this year's recipient of the Freda Drath Battey Distinguished Educator Award. Kabourek was honored for her educational leadership during a June 1 luncheon at UNL.

The conference is directed toward pre-service and in-service teachers. The focus of the workshop is on technology that improves classroom practice, particularly new technologies and instructional methods for the 21st century.

Renfro, secondary ed major, wins Fulbright

 

Brian Rentfro, a senior secondary education major from Swansea, Ill., has received a Fulbright Scholarship. Next fall, he will be traveling to Germany, where he will live and teach English to German students for 10 months.

O'Grady, CEHS, to teach in Brazil on Fulbright

Loni O’Grady, a secondary Spanish education and English as a Second Language education major, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship. She will travel to Brazil in 2013 to gain experience teaching English in a foreign country. O’Grady, of Omaha, is completing her student teaching at Omaha South High School. She teaches Advanced-Placement Spanish, ESL 1 and 2 and a dual-language computer course.

Secondary math student earns Fulbright, will teach in Czech Republic

Fulbright scholarship winner Mallory Slama will spend summer finishing school at UNL and, after graduation in August, will move to the Czech Republic to teach English for a year. Slama is the fifth UNL student to earn a Fulbright award this spring. Her undergraduate degree will be in secondary math education and mathematics with a minor in Czech. Besides English, she also hopes to get involved with the math department where she is teaching.

Justice will present April 13 on promoting young children's literacy

Laura Justice will present April 13 on the topic, "Promoting Young Children's Knowledge About Print: Designing Systemic Early Literacy Interventions." Justice directs the Preschool Language and Literacy Research Lab at The Ohio State University.

Pi Lambda Theta, education honor society, sponsors learning event about graduate April 19

Pi Lambda Theta, education honor society will sponsor an opportunity to learn about graduate study, April 19, 6 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. 

This event is directed toward teachers and other educators for whom graduate studies is a regular part of professional growth and advancement. The event will also be of interest to undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to learn more about graduate study opportunities and engage in dialogue about graduate studies.
