Corkle named to receive 2012 Christa McAuliffe Prize from CEHS

Bryan Corkle, a science teacher in the O'Neill Public Schools, has been named the winner of the 2012 Christa McAuliffe Prize, awarded by the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Julie A. Luft, formerly Arizona State University and now University of Georgia, Jonah B. Firestone, Arizona State University, Sissy S. Wong, University of Houston, Ira Ortega, University of Alaska Anchorage, Krista Adams, University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and EunJin Bang, Iowa State University, Awarded High Honor by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching.

Vandeyar will present keynote speech November 3

Saloshna Vandeyar will present the keynote speech for the Student Research Conference on November 3 at 6:00pm in 105 Teachers College Hall. Her current scholarship focuses on implications of teacher and student identities in constructing classrooms inclusive of racial, linguistic, and ethnic identity

Vandeyar's presentation precedes the student conference, which is November 12.

Rural Education Research Center to host professional development expert

The CEHS-housed National Center for Research on Rural Education (R²Ed) will continue its Creating Rural Connections Speaker Series when it hosts an October presentation from Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh, an associate professor of educational technology at the University of Florida’s School of Teaching and Learning.

Cavanaugh will present “Evidence-Based Practices for Online Teacher Professional Development” Oct. 3 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 212 of the Nebraska Union’s Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. The event is free and open to the public.

CEHS first-year teacher highlighted on first day of teaching

"Elizabeth James is a first-year, first-grade teacher, so naturally we spent the day with her on her first day of school at Elliott Elementary School, 225 S. 25th St.

She balanced nerves with preparedness and unexpected situations with adaptiveness to have a successful first day. Watch the video to hear her talk about the details of day 1."
