TMFD student Kang earns LQG scholarship

Younhee Kang, a doctoral student in Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Lincoln Quilters Guild. Kang’s proposed doctoral research project will focus on quilted armor of East Asia, especially South Korea. She will research cotton armor dating from 4th and 5th century paintings and military uniforms from the 17th and 18th century that display the technique. Kang plans to learn and reproduce the traditional quilting technique, Noo-bi.

USDA entrepreneurship grant invests in rural Nebraska

A University of Nebraska–Lincoln project to support youth entrepreneurship in rural communities has received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The project, which partners high school students with rural business owners, will be led by Surin Kim, assistant professor in Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design and a Nebraska Extension entrepreneurship specialist. Kim will serve as principal investigator and research the economic and social underpinnings of rural flight of youth and young adults in Nebraska.

"Ancestors/Descendants," featuring recent work by Kansas City-based fiber artist Jason Pollen

The fourth exhibition of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery’s 2017-2018 programming year opens this Friday, February 2 at its east campus location. The exhibition continues through March 23. Kansas City-based artist Jason Pollen will speak about his exhibition at 5:15 p.m. in the gallery, located on the secondfloor of the Human Sciences Building on East Campus Loop.

TMFD Students Awarded National AATCC Foundation Research Grants

TMFD Ph.D. students Wei Li and Bingnan Mu recently competed in a national competition and were awarded the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists Foundation Student Research Grants.

Wei Li.  Development of 100% Regenerated Keratin Fibers of High Quality from Waste Wool and Poultry Feathers.  $1,000.

Bingnan Mu.  Dual-Phase Solvent System for Sustainable Reactive Dyeing of Cotton Using Soybean Oil.  $1,300.

International Seed Grant proposals due Dec. 18

Through a generous donor grant, CEHS has funds available to enhance instruction and research through attention to international work and issues. Proposals are being solicited from faculty and staff to support coursework that includes international perspectives, research/creative work that includes an international component, or professional development activities and environmental improvements that will promote our international goals.

Gender, Appearance & Representation: A Roundtable Discussion

The Women's and Gender Studies department has teamed up with Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design this semester for their Fall 2017 Gender, Fashion, & the Media Joint Colloquia series. This will be their third and final event for this semester.

Gender, Appearance & Representation: A Roundtable Discussion will bring three dynamic professors together; Kwakiutl Dreher, Christin Mamiya and Sandra Starkey. Join them November 9th, 2017 from 3:30 - 5:00pm in Andrews Hall in the Dudley Bailey Library.

Celebration of Youth Day

The annual exhibition “Celebration of Youth XXIV” continues through September 30th at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. As with all twenty-three preceding iterations of the exhibition, this one showcases the work of youth from around the state, who competed at the Nebraska State Fair in the 4-H areas of Clothing, Home Environment, and Quilt Quest.

Resume/cover letter review hosted by Advising Center

The College of Education and Human Sciences Academic Advising Center will be hosting a resume/cover letter review day for CEHS undergraduate students on Oct. 10. Students may drop by the Hub in Henzlik Hall between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a 15-minute resume/cover letter critique by qualified Career Services advisors.

“This is a great opportunity for CEHS students to prepare for internships, practicum, student teaching and graduation,” said Dallas Doane, a Student Affairs graduate student in the Academic Advising Center who is coordinating the event.
