"…her dedication and attitude have been nothing short of fantastic. She stepped right into a design assistant slot, normally filled by someone who has a minimum of a four-year degree. Her knowledge and focus are something her teachers and department head should be proud of. She is truly a credit to you and your Textiles, Merchandising & Fashion Design department staff."

So wrote the president of a Ft. Worth, Texas area company about one recent TMFD internee whose “quick study” capabilities and product development skill sets allowed her to fully capitalize on the internship experience. Our programs of study provide students with the critical background necessary to succeed in experiences like internships and in the career world that follows.

Internships provide students with:

  • hands-on experiences in the world of apparel and textile business
  • the opportunity to explore varied career options
  • a head start in the industry
  • the chance to put acquired skill sets to the test in a real-world setting
  • opportunities to network and build professional connections

Students concentrating in every program of study in the department use internships to complement and expand on the learning they acquire in our classrooms, laboratories and studios. Such companies as jcpenney, Nicole Miller, The Buckle, Natori, Tracy Reese, Global Purchasing Group, Von Maur and InStyle Magazine, to name a few, have sponsored TMFD students’ internships in locations as far ranging as Los Angeles, New York, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Kansas City, Omaha and Lincoln.

All TMFD Juniors who meet the minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 in the major are eligible to complete internship credits. They work closely with a faculty mentor who oversees the internship and its documentation. The minimum GPA helps to assure both students, the faculty mentor and the sponsor that they will be well prepared and will be successful ambassadors for and representatives of the university, the college and the department.

TMFD students are applauded by industry sponsors for their:
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Organizational abilities
  • Management and leadership abilities
  • Strong working knowledge of computer programs including Lectra® software
