Athletic training students (ATS) may be assigned to clinical education experiences that involve traveling with teams to away events. Participation in team travel is not mandatory. If a preceptor invites an ATS to travel, it is considered a privilege. Declining the opportunity will not result in any negative consequences—such as grade reductions or retaliatory actions.
If an ATS accepts a travel assignment:
- The preceptor is responsible for ensuring the student receives travel accommodations equivalent to their own.
- All arrangements must follow the University of Nebraska travel policies (go.unl.edu/hc3k).
Academic Responsibilities
Efforts will be made to minimize class conflicts caused by travel. However, students are responsible for:
- Notifying instructors of upcoming travel.
- Submitting assignments before departure.
- Obtaining notes and materials for any missed classes.
Expectations During Travel
While traveling, ATS must uphold all ethical standards outlined by the UNL ATP and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). In addition, when traveling with a UNL athletic team, ATS are expected to:
- Dress according to -or above- the team’s dress code.
- Follow all team rules, including curfews.
- Obtain clearance from the head coach or supervising preceptor before leaving the team for any reason.
- Abstain from alcohol consumption, which is strictly prohibited while representing UNL as an ATS.
